i am just getting into sound recording, i am thinking about the omni studio package. i am wondering if anyone has anything at all bad to say about this setup. i am a guitar player who would want to just plug right in and not have to setup a bunch of stuff, but would also be recording my whole band for demos and stuff.

and also i am a little confused on one thing i have seen on this site a lot. what is a "line level out"? I know that on my powered mixer it is the "main out". but i'm not sure exactly what it is.

Also if i was to get the omni studio how would i hook up the mixer to the omni box. if someone could maybe go through the details of the hookup that would be great. it's a crate px700dlx by the way if thats important.

also i'm not sure if running through the mixer is even neccessay with the omni studio, it seems like it has a lot of inputs on it.

Hubba bubba, funny thing I think I just recommended this thing about 3 times just today. It is a really good deal. M-audio has good support ( if your new well you'll need supprt, no?). HOw many instruments will you record at once? Will you be using Midi?
Oh its got input...oh yeah... 2 mic w/ pre amps two instrument inputs and four stereo aux inputs (is that enough?). Outputs you say? two headphone outputs and one mono effect send per channel. It also has software.

i would probably be recording two guitars, bass, lead and back up vocals, and drums. but i don't really think i would do it all at the same time, maybe just bass, one guitar and drums at the same time and then add on the other tracks later. you said it has the aux inputs what would those be primarily used for?
so would i even need to use a mixer?

Well, you use additional "sends" for outboard effect boxes ( killer reverb, compresser or limiter), simply send out on a channel then return. That is an option, you can simply use plug-ins provided in the software. Now about the instrument and mis inputs, you can use the two mic ins to record the drums and one for bass and one for guitar. That way you get the majority of the song down and later add additional tracks: vocal, one more guitar, keyboard and your set.

i tried looking for the Aarvard pro thingy and i couldn't find it. is it mispelled and does anyone know where to find it. i just wanna see some spec and does anyone have an opinion of it vs. the omni studio. to me the omni looks like it is the perfect setup.

"Aardvark".. I dont know about your price range but i was comparing the omni studio to the aardvark direct pro and was put off by the fact the you cant just plug an electric guitar into the aardvark as it has no hi-impedence input where as the omni has a switch for you to do so. and as i hear it, the pre-amps for mic's are better on the omni.....just what i heard. And its cheaper.

go to this thread just a few spots down "Unbiased educated opinion needed! - Recording Software" I gave some info on the Aarvark set up. Their is a big jump in price, $400 for omni, $750 for Aardvark. To me after reading your "needs in recording" its hard to beat the omni. Each person has their needs, and I look at each persons situation rather than say just buy this box and thats it. I would stick with the omni in your case, it will do a very good job for you, and good choice by Counter to attack (he is getting one). Remember there are more choices than you think out there, but why spend months and months of changing your mind saying : oh this has eight inputs, oh this one has good pres, oh this one has good software... dude, its not worth it. If you need a good card, good software, good mic pres, good manufacture support, its VERY hard to top the omni set up. Later when you learn more, you can tailor your needs more specifially. For example, maybe finding a better mic pres, different type of software and so on. The point is to get started...trust me dude.

by the way

on the comparinson, of aardvark direct pro, vs omni... the direct pro does have instrument inputs, i has those universal inputs where you can plug in a mic key board guitar... the direct pro is $100 dollars more, also a very good deal and guess what it also has midi, the omni doesnt. I like to shop here... look at the specs and pricing for both if you are interestd. You wil also see the aarvark pro Q10 , hey , if you have the money...http://www.bayviewproaudio.com

well, i looked at both and it doens't seem like a 100$ price difference it looks more like about 200$+. the omni is 379 and the aardvark was around 750$ at musicians friend.

no, I ment

Omni vs aardvark direct pro (that is a $100 difference)

the direct pro is $500 (Q10 is 8 channel, direct pro is 4 channel)
the Q10 is $750 (with free $400 mic if you order from bay view)
the Aardvark lx6 (same thing as diret pro but no mic pres) $400

i wish it was that cheap here... cheapest i can find the omni is £400 -> $581 and that really is the cheapest. most places retail it at £500 -> $726

mor..........*sigh*
