questions about laptops and the hardware/software you use

So, I finally broke down and got a laptop so that I can write/record on the go. I'm also planning on using it on stage for soft synths and sequencer work.

My question to everyone is this: Is there some software or hardware that one would recoment for doing music on the go? I know that there are many firewire/USB2 boxes out there, but I'm looking for something that's a bit more smaller. Ya know...something that I can easilly throw in the back pack. The only thing that really seemed to fit that bill so far is the Indigo IO PCMCIA card, and I've seen some good reviews on that.

Also, are there any other good laptop type gadgets that one should have?

i have a cool laptop gadget!!!

It may not be super music related but...

I found using my laptop on the go in the dark sucked sometimes. My brother got me a USB maglight type thing. It is awsome. The USB powers a tiny LED white light which is bright as hell. Defintaly could be useful for you on stage...
