i am new to cool edit pro. i am thinking about getting the program because i have heard good things about it. if i were to use this program i would only be able to put it on my laptop. so how would i get the tracks on the computer? would i also buy a 8-track and plug that into the computer some how or something?...

You should post this in the Computer Recording and Soundcards board, you'll get a lot more replies. Concerning your dillema, although I don't know much about laptops (at all), I assuming setting a recording rig wouldn't be any different. If you want to get into the new digital revolution, pick up a special recording soundcard with a breakout box. If you are going to record guitars, basses, and the like, go with something like this:

With that you can plug a guitar into it and get signals directly or you can use a mic to get a signal via the XLR inputs. If you intend to mic a bunch of things at once, you'll need a more complex setup like a soundcard, mixer, and mics.

Hope I could help and welcome to homerecording.com/bbs!

This isn't really a Cool Edit question, so I moved it to the Computer and Soundcard forum.
