I would like to record my own songs onto cd's through the computer. Can anyone tell me what I'm all going to need, and please be specific because I still don't understand how this all works. I have a Dell Dimension 2350 if that helps. I just want to record my own songs and lyrics onto a cd. That simple, I suppose. If someone could please tell me all the tools and equipment I'll need, I'd appreciate it. Thank you!!!!

Well, I assume you're going to want to have multiple tracks, so you'll need a multi-track recording program.

A cheap, easy to use one is N-Track, which can be download for free and registered for a few bucks. www.fasoft.com
At the higher end of the spectrum would be a program like Cubase, which costs around $500 or so.

Next you need a way to capture whatever you're recording, by which I mean a microphone. You can choose between a condenser or a dynamic microphone. Most people prefer a condensor for guitar & vocal recording. If you go that route, you'll also need a phantom power supply and a preamp.

Those items will be enough to start recording your songs. As you learn more about recording and mixing, you'll definately need a palette of effects to enhance your tracks, such as compression, reverb, chorus, delay, etc...N-Track and Cubase have these equipped.

It really all comes down to how much you can spend, and what quality of recording you are satisfied with. The answer to both, for me at least, is: Never enough

Step 1: Ditch the Dell and get a PC... find a technician who KNOWS what he's doing and have one built!

Step 2: Research research research... pretty much EVERYTHING you want to know (to get started) is somewhere on this BBS

For reference: I'm running a 2.6GHz system with a Card Deluxe (Sound Card designed specifically for multitrack recording) - Now I went high-end on my system and opted for a Motherboard with an on-board SCSI Raid set-up - 5 20GIG Hard Drives set up in a RAID 5 running on Windows 2000 Pro. I also got my hands on a couple 2.1 GIG SCSI Hard Drives which I set up as a stripe set and am currently useing strictly as a Windows Swap File. MEG boost to performance.

Anyhow... once you got the system end of it nailed you'l likely want to invest in some other outboard equipment:

Microphones (If you plan on doing vocals or micing your amp... personally for my guitars I go straight in)

A mixing board (Something small and cheap to start you out... maybe a small Behrenger or a Mackie)

Some cables... and DEFINITELY invest in some decent "near field" monitors... (Speakers designed to play the sound accurately rather than enhance it ... the more accurate the sound comming from the speakers, the better your mix will sound on multiple places (Car stereo; home stereo - night-club down town etc)

And again... research... If you're really new then I would take my time and spend a couple months trolling this BBS gathering as much info as I could THEN make the move to buy.

And feel free to keep asking questions... Remember... there are NO stupid questions... there's no shame in not knowing something... but there's great ignorance in not asking that which you do not yet know.... ok ... now I suddenly sound like Buddah...

And don't let answers like mine discourage you... I'm probably making it sound like a long painful process... it may be fairly long (depending on your budget & dedication) but it's not painful... it's full of challenges and excitement and really great people who are more than willing to help you at every turn.

Welcome aboard!

tanlith. gave you some insiteful info....

You need to share some more info with us...

What is your budget?

What kind of music are you making?

Will you be connecting other instruments to your computer?

Will you be making the music?

How much knowledge do you have?

Ok...

You'll need to get a few things.

But even if you don't have ANY money, you can get started now.

If you do have the money to spend, you should get a ....

faster hard drive
soundcard
monitors
mic
multitrack software
editor
plug-ins
2nd hard drive
control surface

You'll need to do some reading, also (here at HR.COM and other sites).

So once you let us know your financial situation, we can point you in the proper direction.

Peace...
