yo. Alright, right now i'm using Cubase5, Protools, AND N-track for different things with my friends. My computer always overloads when i put like 3 effects on, is there a way I can stick more then 1 track on a track? I've heard of bouncing, but how do I do it with a digital mixer?? Also, should I get a line 6 pod, stomp box, or that other thing thats marginally good for even cheaper?? What effects are a must have for a studio?? Cause I can probably save up to bye boxes for em. thanx people, and if you ignore me, i fully understand.

What CPU are using on your computer? If possible
upgrade there first. I went from a PII 400 to a PIII 750
and it made a world of difference as far as how many
tracks I could run and the amount of real time effects
I could use.

The software you have probably has all the effects
you will ever need as far as tracking and mixing are
concern.

Put some money into upgrading that computer
first. You cant go wrong there!

Hope this helps!

well

i'm pretty sure that my computer is pretty fast, but is there a way I can bounce tracks or something so that I don't need as many? Like if I put an effect on, then combine it with another track?? By the way, what kinda effects should I probably get as a must have for my recording studio at home?? I'm really not sure. Right now i'm mainly using N-Track, Cubase5, and am in the process of learning Protools. Eh, its all good. I really wanna learn to record nicely, cause the stuff i've written, i've REALLY liked, if a cd was out there like that, i'd buy it, but god I suck at recording. Ok thanks and peace.

Bouncing is not the way to go.You can't "un-bounce".Even an old 166 should get 4 tracks with effects in n-track.I'm running a PIII 600 and I get 30 tracks with effects on Win2K pro.Time to upgrade?

Tom

The most important effect is usually the reverb(s). It gives your songs a sense of space, and can really enhance the vocals or lead instruments.

I like analog effects pedals for guitar and keyboards. They are inexpensive and have "real character". Amp simulators and modelers like Pod, Sansamp, J-station, DG Stomp, are really effective when used on synthesizers and drum machines.

hmmm

well, I have a pentium 2 (300) . Its pretty raw. I should upgrade? Hey, uhm, if any of you have any recommendations for a stomp box, reverb, or EQ? Is an EQ box really worth it?? I'll get one over my job if so. I really wanna get nice recordings, but geeze, I just don't know how. I have all the software I need, I just need to know how to mix and record nicely. i guess i'm doin ok, but i suck with computers. I can't get protools to playback : (. Any essentials in a good recording studio i'll get, cause i'm having trouble with free effects on the computer. Thanx and bye.

I would guess the number of tracks is not slowing you down, so bouncing or submixing will not really help....try closing out all the background programs using cont-alt-delete (everything except explorer and systray and your audio program)...also use busses whenever possible...theres no use opening up a reverb on three different tracks when you can open up one reverb and send the three tracks there by bus....

see if the motherboard you have will take a Celeron processor and get you something like a 600mhz Celeron

http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_...essor&topcat_id=1&found=2&ut=1808f02eaa2401ed

Also, make sure you have at least 64mb ram, 128 if you are running anything more than windows 95.....

Heres where you may be encountering problems. 1st off, with a PII at 300mhz, you are suffering from slow CPU. In order to move to a PIII, you might need another motherboard, which is only about $85 on pricewatch.com I advise against the Celeron. Also, considering the age of your computer (they get old fast these days) you probably have a disk bottleneck, as well as memory. Your harddrive is prob an ata66 or worse, you might wanna move up to ata100, which will also require motherboard support. And right now, standard pc133 memory is so cheap its a sin.
Might just wanna retire that box and build ya a new one. If so, I can give you some specs on some awesome shit to get for a DAW.
Also, you might want to make sure you configure everything for whatever program you intend to use. Shut down systems sounds. Set latency and buffers correctly, etc etc etc.
The AMD T-bird processors have much more floating point ability, which is where plug ins come into play. I beleive in them completely.
Peace,
Paul

uhhh

how do I use busses, whats DAW??? I'm sorta on a budget. How much would a pentium3 cost?? wait I would only have to pay 85 to upgrade or somethin?

If you could state an approximate budget, some of us here could tell you where your money would be best spent.....

BTW, how many tracks and effects can you get before you start having problems....

well,

I can get around 5 effects on everything before it starts screwing up. It sucks, but oh well. This includes EQ and everything. Well, should I get an eq box? That's part of the problem. WHat is most worthit?? Well, lets say i'm on an around 300 bucks budget maybe a bit more when I start working this summer. What boxes should I get? I find the most problems with my songs is the parts needing to come out and the non togetherness, like its not rythmically together. I record them correctly and everything, but theres some backround noise, and they delay. What effects should I probably get? Also if there are any neet distortions to screw with, or an effects program you'd recommend, that'd be great.
By the way Gidge, I see ya a lot on this site, and thanx for the help, you seem to know a lot and into music/guitar like I am. later.

Check out pricewatch.com for $500 or so you can get a new 1 gig P3. I'd check that out!

I hate to bother you with more questions, but do you mean 5 effects on each track or are you using 5 effects over the stereo mix.....also how many tracks do you typically work with....what effects do you typically use.....

Now, Im going off a whole different way here, but....look into the DSP Factory sound card...it has been discontinued but they are being sold for about $200 now...I think they originally started out at $1000+...see if it will work on your computer....the deal is, it has onboard dsp, which is basically an engine that will power 24 mixer channels, ten bus outs,6 aux sends, 104 bands of EQ and delay on 20 channels...it comes with a 4 in/4 out card......

dudes.

well, I am only able to get 5 effects on the overall stereo mix. Should I get that card? DSP whatever.

If you need more effects than that, its either a computer upgrade or a card like the DSP factory....that card for what it is selling for now will go a whole lot further than taking the same money and trying to upgrade an old computer...i remember seeing a promotional video and they were demonstrating it on a 133mhzPentium and it was smoking....I have no idea why this card was discontinued, they (Yamaha) may be coming in with something new....

The only downside is that you wont get continued driver support but if you get it going with the current drivers (and im sure you will) that wont be a big deal....

Also, not all software can be used that will take advantage of its DSP...but I know for sure the Cubase you listed does....

Gidge.

yo gidge, would that soundcard help me with putting more effects on?? I have a crappy 20 bit one. I mean its not crappy cause its 20 bits, but everything else heh. Its the Project Card.

yo angel,

yes it would...the onboard dsp is acually an engine that powers the whole effects and mixing stuff that is usually handled by the cpu....it wont need any power from your computer....you have 014 bands of parametic eq across 20 channels, 26 dynamics processors, and 2 REV500-style processors.....
