can anyone give me some insight on how to make something sound like it's coming from behind? the most recent example i've heard of this is the new song "10,000 days" by tool. listening to it in my car, i swear the background thunder is coming just out my back speakers. is there a trick to this? delay maybe?

Invert the polarity on one side of whatever you're trying to do that with.

Keep in mind that it's throwing mono compatibility out the window, but you can always try to compensate for that in other ways...

Delay is a possibility but an extremely short delay. Phasing is the trick. You are simulating the time difference that occurs when the sound reflects from the pinnae of your ears (how we localize sound). See the following for more info:

Try taking the same track into both a left and right channel (hard panned) and move one of the tracks by sample increments.
