question regarding cables

hi there.
after some savings of the old pennies i finnaly purchaed a studio project B! mic and a behringer MIC200 pre-amp. they look and feel great..cant wit to get to work with them.
i have also ordered an zlr to xlr cable so i can use the mic.
in the meantime, i was wondering something. i have some crappy cheap mics, and the cable on them is XLR to 1/4 jack. so i tried plugging the xlr end into my new B1 mic and the 1/4 jack into the preamp, and then run that all into my fostex mr-8 recorder. but i got no signal.
am i right in thinking that i can only use this B1 mic with an xlr cable?
thats my main question really.

Do a search for "Phantom Power".

XLR on both ends only for condensor mics. They require phantom power that is only on the XLR outs from the preamp.
