Question on whats going in, whats coming out.

I have a basic soundblaster. i dont do a lot of line in/out so I dont worry about it much ,but I have a question: when I DI a bass guitar for example, it sounds crystal clear out my speakers. however, after I record and play it back it sounds like garage. is it the sound card? thanks

sounds about right.....are you using any kind of pre amp or mixer or what kind of direct box are you using to go DI?

Fender American P bass into a Sansamp DI. The actual signal is awesome, but when played back :-(
