question on recording directly to CD

Hi,

I would like to record speakers at a convention directly to a CD.

Any ideas on what is the best way to do this?

(I don't mind lugging a puter to the event if necassary, would likely use clip on mics for the speakers, have mixing board and so forth, but can and am willing to completely change the set up to do this)

Sound is sound is sound (doesn't matter if its speech or music). You need a basic recording setup with mics, pre-amps, a recording device and a CD-burner.

#1 - Immediately get a good beginner recording book (spend $20 before spending hundred$/thousand$) that shows you what you need to get started and how to hook everything up:

For recording software for a laptop/computer, Audacity ( http://audacity.sourceforge.net ) is FREE and will do a great job.

If you cannot setup a laptop or computer, you can alway go to a "all-in-one" recorder with a CD-burner built in:

I think you mis-interpreted my question - or I didn't make it clear. I know how to record sound and speech, I've done musical group recording, recording of depositions for courts etc. getting the recording isn't at all the issue.

The issue is I want to record the sound directly to a CD as the live event is occuring so that I have a finished product as soon as the event is over. My experience there is limited, I can reproduce recordings easily, record sounds, etc easily, but to do it instantly to finished product I'm not knowledgeable of.

Most speakers will talk for approx. 1 hour and there will be usually two speakers per meeting.

A few hundred copies withing 15 to 30 minutes!?!!? That is your problem not recording direct to CD. You need a CD recorder something like a Sony or Tascam that you plug the main outs of your mixer into. Just hit play and record and let it do the work. If you want individual tracks just push stop and then play again and it creats a new track. But seriously how are you going to get a few hundred copies withing 15 to 30 minutes!?!!?

I'd go with a laptop running something like wavelab, PCMCIA sound card, cheap portable pre with a mic, record the wav, burn the disc, done.

I can't fathom who you would be able to produce a couple hundred CD's in half an hour though.

well I am looking to find a way to record and immediately duplicate, getting the live event recorded to a CD is the main focus, and answered here. (from there I can duplicate, albiet in longer time frames as many copies as I need using multipile sound duplication machines)

But duplication in the fastest possible manner is also what I'd like to do.... and yes as someone mentioned this is really the harder part. Not sure if there is any way to record multiple copies simultaneously as the event is occuring as well.

Well I thank you for your input guys, I found what I needed, it records up to 60 simultaneous cd discs within minutes of the ending of a live event (in other words it records 60 cd's simultaneously as the event is happening - so one has 60 cd's which can be the end product within minutes of the event ending.)

You can start with as little as 6 cd's and add on up to 60 cd's at once. My guess is I'll start with the lower quantity and add a few modules for more, and then use a more traditional cd duplicator to get more cd's burned quicker.

For those interested it's by mfdigitial and the unit is 5906 Live

I just need to find out what there asking for a price to determine which way I want to go.
