I have posed this question before. We are using a VF16 with mic preamps we cant bypass. We would like to use a presonus blue tube mic pre. Is this going to cause problems, mic pre into mic pre? If not what should the setting on the gain trim be sat at on the VF16?
Thanx for any help on this issue. The only alternative is to go running willy nilly all over the net an probably read a bunch of technical jargon that I will not be familiar with and gettin even more:confused:

The mic pre on the recording unit will stay in-line, which is unfortunate, but that is what you have to deal with. You might check for a Line In input, but usually, these ALSO run through the mic preamp. They just have a -10 or -15 or -20 PAD over the input.

Anyway, provided that the units preamp can accept a Line Level input (your Presonus will kick out a Line Level signal at it's output...) you should have no problems with running the Presonus before the recording units mic pre. Start with the gain all the way down on the recording units mic pre and set the level on the Presonus. If it is all as I suspect, you won't have to touch the gain on recording units mic pre at all and will get quite enough gain range just from the Presonus.

Now, you MIGHT have to raise up the gain on the recording units mic pre....:( this would mean that the mic pre in it goes to infinity on it's gain reduction. Just be careful about turning it up too much if this is the case.

Good luck.
