Question dealing with the Firepod

Hey everyone. I use a Yamaha AW16G to record because it had what I wanted in order to get started in recording. One problem with it though, is that the pres are pretty weak, and are not that high of quality (only two XLRs as well). So, finally getting to my question, would I be able to run a Presonus Firepod to the AW16G and use its pres instead of the G's? I do not own a Firepod, but the price and features entice me to look into it. Would this be a good idea?

The firepod uses firewire so it'd be no good to you at all. And you don't need an interface anyway do you? You already have A-D-A conversion in your box.

If you just need more and better preamps you could just buy more pres and go throught the line ins on your recorder.

you CAN use the firepod as a standalone multi mic pre. The new firmware update takes care of that.

So I can't run 1/4 from the back of the Firepod to the AW16G? It (Firepod) has more inputs in the back than just firewire.

You could but it's an expensive way to get 8 preamps seeing as you don't need the conversion. I assumed you wanted a digital interface into the yammie, that's the firepods primary purpose.

Personally I'd go for a mixer like a yamaha MG series or soundcraft E series, using the inserts as direct outs, that way you get your 8 preamps for around half the price of the firepod.

It would be better (IMHO) to just get a set of decent pres. Yes you could get the Firepod and it might work, but the price of that unit is the Firewire convertor, not the pres. Look at the Octane, the Octopre, the ADA8000 and Nady/SMpro audio 8 in pres.

One option you might consider is getting something like the SMPro PR8 and then modding it. All told it might cost you 350 bucks but you'll get better pres than the Firepod...

I have no complaints with the firepod's pres....though I did buy it as a FW convertor. They do an OK job at best, nothing special...
