Question about using a micpre as a possible insert

Hopes this makes sense and I also looked for another forum that may host this question. So if im in the wrong forum, " Excuse the Ring"

anyways,

I have a new digital mixer which has 16 micpres. Ok no problem there. So I would like to be able to plug various mics into certain pres for selectibility, but on the same note I have a VTB-1 which is only one channel. I could hook any mic directly to it to listen for taste, but I would like to some how hook the VTB-1 up to the console and use it for A/Bing for any mic that I have plugged directly in the mixer's micpres. This way I could listen to a mic without the VTB-1 or with it. Is this possible? Do I just hook it up the same way I would a outboard processor?

I used to only use the mixer onboard pres and I had a dual channel preamp that was hooked into one channel of the mixer and already setup to plug a mic to if I wanted. But then I only had about 3 mics which wasn't too big of a hassle.

Whenever I haved mixed in another place other than my own, the mic and pre selections were done prior to me getting there, So I have no idea as to what the other guys did.

anyways, is this possible?

Thanks
Malcolm

Inserts are usually after the preamp so in doing that you would always be running the mic through the board pres and just adding in the VTB.

The proper way to do that would be to setup a patchbay or jackpanel for the preamp inputs. Generally it's a bad idea to use a PB for mic inputs because there can be issues with phantom power. With a jack panel you would simply take the mic cable and plug it into the next jack to A/B the pres.

Yeah, That makes sense. But im thinking with the routing capabilities of my mixer (Dm-24) It may be possible. The mixer has a built in digital batch bay that allows you to reassign channels to other output or input sources, etc. you can also assign certain channels to other channels and crap like that. Im still learning it. The manual sucks as usual. It may be possible though. If not, then Ill just go back to my old method.

Thanks Tex

The only way that could work is if you could hook up the mic to a non preamped input and then route that signal to a preamp on the board (most likely impossible) or to an output assigned to the VTB. That would definately defeat phantom power and would probably cause other problems with multiple DAC passes of a non preamped mic signal. I imagine the noise would be pretty unbearable.
