I bring external Mic Pres into the DM4800 using the channel inserts. You could also use the Assignable Returns, but I don't detect any real sonic advantage and it's more work, for me, to patch to the returns. If I had a dedicated A/D converter, which I don't, I'd probably use one of the digital inputs to bring external Mic Pres into the board.
