Have you ever met a guitar player that can't tap? It's not really a skill that takes decades to master.

I've gotta agree with that. When I was a wee little guitar god wannabe I could play the whole tapping part from Eruption before I could even alternate pick or anything. Actually if I remember correctly, that is the only part of eruption I could play. But I still thought I was the shit. ;)

Completely ditto. I never learned the rest of it either. Tapping is easy. Doing something interesting with it is a different story. Learning how to tap is probably the easiest thing about playing guitar. Yet everyone seems so impressed by it....

I want to hear either one of you asshat's play the tapping to eruption. Go ahead........bust it out.......... :D

he's a real player. it's not about tricks like eddie.

if slash would've od'd 10 years ago he would have been up there with jimmy and stevie.

now people wonder : 'can he tap?'

fucking sad.

I agree with that. He's got chops, kick ass tone (had?), feel, and he can work a wah like no one's business.

amen travis.

But for the record, Eddie wasn't all about tricks. He has tons of great leads that don't use tapping at all. He was an innovator, did something new on almost every album up until Dave left.

If there weren't so many Eddie Van Halen clones maybe he would be given more respect. He was a true original.

In conclusion, I prefer Slash's style of playing.

This is the one occasion I'd use the American term FAWCETT - if you have to tap you're trying to fawcet!
Sorry pun intended but I bet it doesan't translate too well beyond the UK & antipodes.
Didn't Angus Young do a primeval tap early on - Jail Break I think?
Isn't Slash all about a gold top LP & Marshall stack? I wouldn't imagine tapping would match that set up.

Most of you don't have respect for tapping because you are too young. When VanHalen's 1st album was released it was unlike anything we had heard before. There was no internet to look up guitar tab, and there were no videos to show you how to play everything. The only computers at the time were owned by NASA. We had to learn everything by ear playing vinyl records over and over. What may seem old and easy to you guys was new and difficult to figure out at the time. There were so many EVH rip offs because he was an innovator. It was the same with the Beatles, Hendrix, AC/Dc, etc.. People always copy what is popular until everyone is burnt out on it. Just wait, the music that you guys think is cool now will be scoffed at in 20 years and you will be ranting just like me. ;)
I remember laughing at GNR because Slash was such a lame guitarist. He has gotten much better over the years.

At least Eddie didn't play that piece of shit "Sweet Child O' Mine"!
Then again, Eddie played on a few pieces of shit of his own!
All and all, Eddie's twice the innovator and 3 times the player!
It's fact.Mathematically provable!

tapping never interested me and still doesn't. Never even tried it and don't care to.
EVH and Slash never interested me and never will.

Clasically-influenced rock guitar goes hand in hand with the worst of the genre: eye makeup, tight leather pants with cod pieces, and piles of permed poodle fur.

The worst of the genre was definately hair bands: the eye makeup, pants, and big hair.

However, GnR was a hair band, but not classically influenced, so your association doesn't hold up to your statement.

Tapping had its place. Iron Maiden used tapping as well, and while true, they donned leather, no metal fan would be stupid enough to lump them in with GnR, Ratt, Poison, White Lion and all the other bands of the LA scene.

tapping doesn't have to be EVH style eruption. I agree that tapping solos a la eruption are way overdone and abused and frankly not that useful other than for showing off.

However, tapping is VERY good for an interesting dynamic when you want to bring the level of attack down on the guitar.

check this guy out... I always dig his tapping even though its at the opposite end of the spectrum of EVH

Agreed. Don Caballero are a great example of this.
In the Absence of Strong Evidence...

Tapping rules. You just have to do it with some style.

"Eruption" style tapping sounds lame as hell these days, but alot of people do some amazing stuff with tapping that bears no resemblance to tired old 80's techniques.

Watch this, specifically the lick at about 38 seconds. If a guitar lick could give me a boner, it would be that one.
