I plan on sampling some bass & snare drums to use for those projects where the drums just don't cut it. Does any body have any tips on doing it? I would assume that I should record the drums as is & save it without any effects so I can give it the sound I want for the mix. Am I right in this? Should I compress or limit, anything or just leave them as is? Anything I am really missing here? I plan on saving them as 24bit mono wavs & using them with apulsoft's aptrigga2. Any help is appreciated.

the key to making good samples for your purposes is to keep them as neutral and flexible as possible. don't limit, don't EQ, don't compress, don't anything -- if it needs them, do when you're replacing the drums to make them mesh a little better.

i'd also suggest doing a lot of multisampling -- on the snare drum, for example, do multiple hits in different areas of the drum, with varying strengths. think of it: how does a snare sound when you play off the edge? how about when you tap it versus when you slam the sonovabitch? flatstick it and hit the head and rim at the same time?
