Hey, probably a really stupid question, but, if you're recording straight through an audio interface, preamps, etc to your computer, why is it that room acoustics matter so much....don't you just put on your headphones and listen (meaning no sound is being emitted to the room).

If you're talking about recording direct without a mic, then yes, room acoustics won't affect the actual recording.....

BUT......How are you going to monitor, mix and make decisions if your room is lying to you? And if your answer to that is that you'll mix, monitor and make decision with only headphones, then that's not really a solution because monitoring and mixing with headphones does not give you an accurate representation of what 's really going on.

If you're recording instruments or vocals in the room then they will be effected by the acoustics. if you are mixing on headphones expect a lot of replies telling you you'll get better results through monitors in a treated room (which is generally true)

The room matters. Just like being cold or hot or hungry or stuffed will affect your ability / willingness to work. Having a room that adds noise / distractions, even if you don't record in that room, will distract you from what you're trying to do. Even with headphones, those distraction can be a bit much. Even the headphones are a bit of a distraction. Modern day head vise and ear sauna. Was that bird outside, or part of your mix? Did the guitar player drop something, or did the ice maker drop some fresh ice? Was it that windy, or did someone leave the A/C on while tracking? Is that crickets, or is the fan on my laptop about to die? Things that are just a lot easier to identify if you're not distracted, or it simply couldn't be something else.

What color is the sky in your world, anyway????

Bright orange, orange everyones bright orange?

I just do more event like stuff. Nothing sets off a drum solo like the Raven part. Or the squirrels chucking acorns at passing motorists. Even a few of the indoor gigs have a pigeon colony singing along.
