I have a question about Recording a drum machine track in reference to it coming out in stereo.

If I plug the left and right rca outputs into a single stereo 1/4" adaptor and plug it into track one on my Fostex MR-8 will I have true stereo drums?

Or do I have to plug both the right and left rca outs into mono 1/4" adaptors and plug both of them into tracks one and two to get true stereo drums?

Please let me know how to go about this.

Thanks,
Paul Karate

Let me rephrase.....

If you input is a STEREO input then that should work. But you will need to send it to two seperate tracks.

Check the manual for your drum machine. See if you are able to pan individual drums (L/R) or assign them to separate outputs. I have an Alesis SR-16 that has this feature so I assume than Boss and other units do also. It's a nice added feature than gives you greater control when mixing. You can place individual drums anywhere plus you have the added benefit of being able to apply EQ and compression to specific drums. This is helpful to control cymbals and to distinguish the kick drum from a bass guitar.

Paul - you need to do some serious reseach about your recording unit and stereo/panning generally. By definition, a single track cannot be stereo - two are required.

"Stereo" panning works by sending the same signal to both tracks only with differing volume levels so you get an apparent position.

If your drum machine has two outputs for stereo, why do you think that feeding it into one will make it stereo? Has your left output got L/Mono on it, like most do?

And does it sound like stereo when you put it into one channel? Are the drums in different places left and right?

You've also crossposted this question in two different forums - bit of a no-no around here.
