Hullo,
I'm thinking of picking up an old Phonic PMC1202 mixer to use as a drum mixer. On the back, it doesn't have direct outs, but it does have the kind of inserts where you can put in a Y-cable, so it obviously sends and receives at the same time. Can you use those as just a direct out if you use a standard 1/4 TRS cable?
Thanks,
Brandon

You don't need a TRS cable even. You can do one of two things. Plug in a TS to the first "click" (into the insert of course)and you'll tap off signal. The other thing you can do is to solder a TRS connector to the cable at ONE END and short the ring and tip together. Then you can fully seat the plug and do the same thing (tap off signal).

SO inserting just one click in will use those inserts effectively as "direct outs?" I prefer not to do any soldering on the mixer; I have plenty of TRS and TS cables that can be used if it will work.

Yes, that will work.

What Track Rat was referring to wasn't soldering on the mixer, but making a cable that has a TS jack on one end and a TRS jack on the other with the tip and ring soldered together. What this will do is pass the signal through the insert point's send (tip) and return (ring) while also sending the signal through the cable to the recorder.

The Hosa DOC10 will do that job if you don't want to solder.

Is that the only way to do it? Have a TRS on one end and TS on the other?

Okay, I see; that was just another option. So, I have an 8-channel TRS - TRS snake that I want to send from the console to my patch bay. If I just insert the TRS one click in on the outs on the console, and then into the patchbay, that will work, right?

just use TS cables and insert to the first click of the insert socket

i've said that about 10 times this week
