Question about MIDI & Equipment

Hello,

I have a yamaha dtxplorer (electric drum kit) and have wanted to do some recording for sometime. I was looking at a audio/midi interface so I could potentially plug in my drums via MIDI and record onto my computer through ableton live for example. I also wanted the ability to be able to record mics so it would need pre amps etc.

I've also been looking at midi controllers like the alesis q25 midi keyboard. I was wondering If I could plug my drum kit into one of these via MIDI and then record onto my laptop.

If so this means I could just get an audio interface for mics and guitar, and then use the midi controller for a keyboard and a MIDI device for my electric drum kit.

I hope this makes sense, I just don't want to buy a audio/midi interface for more money, if I could just use the midi on the midi controller. Or would it be better to have an audio/midi interface all in one?

Probably obvious, but I am new to this and don't want to waste money.

recording midi:

You can record midi by getting a dedicated midi interface. These are not that expensive. You might be able to do it via the q25 so long as it has a midi in. I checked the Alesis website, but their info on the q25 was unbelievably bad.

If you also want to record audio, then you should look rather at an interface that has the number of audio inputs that you are likely to want to record simultaneously, and has midi in and out.

You don't need to record midi to get midi input. There are WAV to MID conversion software options out there. Just mic it and fix it in post. Otherwise you need something with a midi INPUT that's going to pass that signal along to your computer / software.

Ok thanks for the reply's guys. From what I gather cheaper midi controllers like the q25 don't have midi inputs, only outputs so I would still need a midi interface of some sort.

Perhaps the Alesis iO | 2 would suit me well, it has as a midi in and out, and also xlr with phantom power for mics. Just the price is the only factor.
