Hey all,
Does anyone know about how ASIO reduces latency time, and which sound cards have the lowest latency times? How does ASIO work, and are only certain sound cards compatible with it? With ASIO, do certain sound cards still have lower latency times than other cards with ASIO drivers?

Thanks, I'm very much confused!

Your CPU speed and OS afftect latency numbers as well. Nobody can answer your question if you don't go over your system specs.

What software do you plan to use?

Yeah, we need more info. In terms of direct monitoring, you get the shortest latency when you monitor without going through the CPU etc, such as feeding a copy of an input straight back out a physical output without it ever getting processed.

To put it simply, ASIO drivers and WDM drivers have fewer operating system hoops to go through to grab the audio data and shove it around.

are you guys saying that if i upgrade my cpu to a faster one, i'll have a lower latency? currently i have amd xp 1800+.

You won't have any problems due to the processor with that Athlon. You can run 25+ tracks easily and record at the same time.

Faster CPU has a minimal effect on latency, everything else being equal. It's the driver architecture that makes the most difference. But a faster CPU will probably let your driver perform closer to the bleeding edge of its ability.

My last system was an AMD 1800xp. I use cubase SX..latency was 25ms. I recently upgraded to a PIV 3.0Ghz and I was able to bring the DMA buffer down to 512 on my M-Audio Delta cards (1x 1010, 2x 410). Latenct is now at 11 ms.

Short route is to get a mixer and monitor through it. That's how the Pros do it
