Question about Firewire 1814, ext hard drive, and hub

I have a Macbook Pro that has only one FW400 output. So....do I go out from that to the 1814, and then out from the 2nd FW400 output on the 1814 to the hard drive? Or do I need to go from laptop to hub, then hub to Ext HD and 1814? Thanks.

Unless your HD has two firewire ports, you'll need to use your first suggestion.

I would never use a hub.
