Question about "Cher" auto-tuning.

Even though the effect on the Cher song wasn't auto-tune (it was a vocorder), if you set auto-tune to its fastest, hardest settings it will produce that effect. Another way that this is done is by hooking a keyboard up to Auto-tune and playing the vocal part. That is the way that this is done when someone is doing the effect on purpose.

Yeah, I could do that to that old Vocalist, too. Midi into it and walk the vocal around like a pissed off cat on a leash!

Since I don't play live and can sing reasonably well, I've never used autotune for pitch correction, though I will say that I've come to think I could use it at times - I inadvertently got used to the kind of perfect-pitch singing you hear on new pop/rock stuff and it's beginning to feel weird.

But anyway, I wanted to say that I've always liked the pitch correctors for vocal transposition. I'm notoriously lazy when it comes to vocal recording (I do everything else with synths) and I never could be bothered to do harmonies and overdubs. So when I had the chance to use the TC Helicon Voice One, I loved how I could do smooth harmonies by re-pitching leftover takes of the main vocal via MIDI, or even go totally wild and create a whole new vocal melody. I couldn't afford it back then and though it came down in price I never could really justify the cost, but I really think I'm going to get it one of these days.

my understanding is that for years the engineer said it was a vocodor, but recently he admitted that he used autotune, because he wanted to keep the trick a secret (until T-Pain found out about it).

I'm sure this makes me an open target...

...and I've said it on here before, but I kinda like that Autotune sound.....(Please don't hurt me.)

There's a guy named Wallpaper out of the SF East bay who uses it on almost all his songs (and live), and although it's pretty gimmicky, I think it works for him. Most of the time (like when I use it) it seems to get pretty warbly, but some folks seem to manage to control its shifts a bit better.

That could be true, but Auto-tune really does work like a vocorder. It just uses the sound of your own voice as a carrier. Auto-tune is just more convienient for this sort of thing.
