i've just bought a alesis 3630 compression unit but i'm unsure how to connect it to my 424 mark 3, what is the best way to do this, sorry if this is a dumb question, i'm new to this stuff...

thanx

Jellyhead,

You have to look at the manual for the compressor to see what kind of levels you can plug into it.

If its line level only, you need to run whatever you are recording through a pre amp first to bring it up to line level before plugging it into the compressor.Unless its an instrument with line level outs.

Than you plug the compressor into the line level input on the Tascam.

DBX makes a nice small pre for $99.It will do this for both electric guitar and bass, and low impediance mics.

One of the cool things about the 424 is it has direct outs for every track seperatly,so you can run a track through the compressor after you record it.Thats another option if you don't want to go for the pre.

You could also run the compressor through the effects return on the Tascam, but this is usually not recommended as a compressor isn't relly an effect.

If you don't mind me asking, where and when did you buy the 3630?

Hope this helps
Pete

Hi jellyhead,
Sorry I didn't reply sooner,if you use the search function here you can find a lot of comments about this compressor, read them and you can draw your own conclusions.

I don't know where you live but the new hot compressor is the RNC,you can buy it mail order for $179,and from what Iv'e read here and other places it is worth many times the price.

I can't personally reccomend it since I don't own one,but there is not much doubt it's a great little compressor.

Hope this helps,
Pete
You can e-mail me if I can help any other way.
