Although many Americans tend to not know much about what's going on outside the US, you're quite right ... 
The Euro was made up in the last decade (1999 book money), and not before this decade (2002) you could actually get physical Euros (i.e. cash).
Haven't ever seen a 20-euro-coin though... must be big as a coaster.

Ain't that just south of Eurika on 101? And they don't even use Euros in der Schweiz...

oh yeah? fortunately, most places of interest along the north-south-axis thru our little country accept euros (and all bigger business too). I think they just have to: otherwise our northern neighbours would just use our roads to get to Italy and not even spend anything more than the ridiculous 40 Franks for the "Autobahnvignette".
