Quantegy are a bunch of opportunist thieves!

Tim (Beck) mentioned this previously, 'bout Quantegy raising prices on tape, especially their 456 but it bears repeating here.

For a company which is going down the toilet, they sure want to make a killing on their last batches of tape. First they have a fire sale, trying to create panic in the tape community, without substance and then raise prices!

Good riddance!

Guys, buy your Quantegy 456 equivalent tape, RMGI SM911, here:

or here:

or here:

May RMGI live on! :)

Good point.
I usually chose Basf over Quantegy for its better quality in the past, and now that I've switched to wider track tape and tried SM911, I'm never buying Quantegy again!

By the way, you wouldn't know any Canadian stores? 'Cause those customs fees are pretty high at times. It's something like CAN $50 fees for a box with two rolls of 1/2" tape!

Yeah Basf / EMTEC was always better than Ampex / Quantegy and now we have the same quality under RMGI. Cool indeed! :)

Man, that's a lot for customs!

Unfortunately I haven't found any place in Canada, online, which sells tape, whether RMGI or Quantegy. I was meaning to contact someone at RMGI and ask about distributors here but I'm procrascinating. Have to do it.

BTW, which recorder do you own ?

Protape (datastores.co.uk) appear to have cancelled the order and refunded the money. I guess they don't actually have any RMGI yet. I'll try again in a few weeks.

That's too bad. Let us know when the order goes through.

Tascam 38. I'm also planning on getting a Revox deck for mixdowns, instead of consumer Akai.

I've contacted their Canadian distributor about where I can buy in Canada, and after he found out that I'm not gonna be buying full boxes, but just 2-3 rolls a time instead, he hasn't replied back  Oh well...

There's only one Canadian online store I've found, they had Quantegy 456 1/2" tape and it was $120 per roll.

Nice machine the 38 :) I once owned an Akai deck and it was good sounding but I see what you're saying.

You may want to go to a local Long & McQuade and ask if they can special order some tapes for you.

Do you happen to have a link for that thieving online store which sells for $120 ?

If you plan to buy online, from the states, maybe it'd be to your benefit to ask for USPS shipping as customs would be just 14% of the item cost or about $14 for every 100 bucks. If you can help it, don't let 'em ship via courier 'cause the so called "brokerage" fees can be frightening.

I'll try that.

No, I didn't save that link... It was some electronics store in Toronto.

They sent it by UPS this time. Yeah, I should have asked them for more shipping options.

Yeah, when sending the regular way, like USPS, customs usually just charges taxes, gst + pst plus a flat $5 fee. That's a whole lot better than what something like UPS does. I recall one time getting a $50 bill for a $60 item! So not only will UPS smash your shit, they'll rip you off as well!

Unfortunately US Recording Media has it wrong when it comes to equivalents. The SM468 is a +6 operating level tape (406 is a +3) and is closer to 456 but requires a bit more bias. 407 is also a +3 tape, just on a thinner base. RMGI doesn't have any +3 tapes but one can do very well with the RMGI LPR35 (equivalent to Quantegy 457) and SM911 (equivalent to Quantegy 456) and run the recorder at a lower operating level.

It should be like this:
406- No direct equivalent exists but can be setup for SM911 / SM468 (closest match)
407- No direct equivalent exists but can be setup for LPR35 (closest match)
457- RMGI LPR-35
456- RMGI SM911 / SM468* (*needs more bias)
499 / GP9- RMGI SM900

I've just taken delivery of some SM911. Two 1/4" reels, one 1/2" reel and a 5" 1/4" spool to follow. Protape have done some rather strange things in the past, so I'll have to phone them up and find out what's happened.

They're going to have a fun time if they try to charge the credit card now, because I've moved house since the order was placed :D

Hey, thanks for the update. So as I understand, you took delivery from some other place ? Was it from Protape ?

It was indeed from Protape, I'm just not sure whether I've paid for them

Something like this happened when I tried to order some red 1/2" leader, a box suddenly turning up after I'd forgotten about it. In any case I'm glad to have a supplier for 1/2" again. I'm also pleased about the 1/4" tape, since I've been trying to mix each album on a different brand of tape...

Yeah, I see what you're saying ... Protape may indeed be a bit disorganized but at least you've got tape and that is great news! :)

RMGI tape specs

I dont know if you've seen the actual specs on the RMGI tapes but I thought I'd share this with you anyway. Here is a link directly to RMGI in Holland.
Lots of good information:

http://www.rmgi.nl/

On the left side of the home page, scroll down to the "Product Overview"
link. This will open a series of links to pdf files on all the tape types.

Enjoy,
