Quality Plug-ins?

Mixing and Mastering.
I am looking for a new set of great plug-ins.
I already have the Waves plug-ins but im looking for something of the same quality or better.
Ive heard that the UAD plug-ins are really nice, but you need to put a card in your computer to get them to work. I cannot put any cards into my computer since its not really mine, so:
Does anyone know of any plug-ins that are as good or better than UAD and Waves atall?

Im looking for a minimal set of plugs: 2 comps, EQ, reverb.

I would go URS or waves SSL. Personally, I like the EQ and channel on the Waves SSL a lot, but the URS stuff is also very cool.
 
i was searching for some new eq plugins for the last few weeks. demoed the sony oxford and the urs stuff. i ended up going with the URS N series and A series. the oxford was awesome, but too transparent. i like the sonic character of the URS stuff. this is coming from a person who previously own and loved uad-1 plugins. still do, i just got a macbook pro as my studio computer, it doesnt have any pci slots... :(

TC Powercore Firewire would be an option for you if that computer has a firewire port.
 
Which DAW software?

I'm in PTLE

EQ (VST) : LP / HP Filter - http://www.kjaerhusaudio.com/geq-7.php
EQ : Analog Warmth - (URS / Waves SSL) McDSP Filterbank

Comp: Analog Saturation - McDSP Analog channel, Waves SSL
Comp: Transparent - Oxford, (RenComp - Waves you prob already have)

Verb - Altiverb, TL Space

The Massey plugs are good, but are currently only RTAS and TDM. So if you are using ProTools you could consider these:

There have been a lot of requests for him to port these over to other formats like AU or VST, so hopefully he will do that at some point.

Can't say it enough. If I have to choose between Voxengo and my UAD card, I'd take Voxengo (and I love my UAD plugs). Good prices - usually around $60 each. Great sound and very innovative. Some of my favs:

Soniformer - Kind of a cross between an multi band comp and dynamic EQ. Nothing can tighten up bass content like this can, IMO.

GlissEQ - A dynamic EQ that can sound awesome.

Elephant - Search around and you'll find that this limiter is preferred over some big name plug-ins.

Curve EQ is good too. It's linear phase, and has some unique controls. I tend to use Gliss EQ more, though.

THe UAD Plate 140 still gets the first call on my reverb needs, and the LA2A is great also. Fairchild is alright. Too bad you can't use a UAD card.

I was looking at the Oxford plugs but they only seem to work with Pro Tools Mac, not Cubase PC. :(

I looked on the URS website and found 2 types of plugs

Native RTAS AU VST

TDM RTAS AU VST

Would any of these work on my PC with Cubase?

Correct.

Native is 'in house' (in computer) processing.


Since you're in Cubase, I would strongly recommend demoing the GEQ-7 http://www.kjaerhusaudio.com/geq-7.php .

I've found this plug to be the best EQ plug I've used for LP and HP filtering. Extremely musical.

wow. I think i'm going to take exception at what limit has been saying here. the answers are correct...just the reasoning/explanation has me wondering. i'm probably mis-interpreting this, but here's my take on it:

Native means that the plug is using your CPU power to run it.

TDM means you have DSP farms (like the UA cards) which do the processing for you, freeing up your CPU to handle other jobs.

neither of these are Mac or PC specific.

RTAS, AU and VST are all different types (formats) of plugins.

Cubase runs VST, so as long as the company have a native VST version of the plugin, it should in theory work.




we're probably saying the same thing here. Just wanted to clear the air :)

Yeppers on the Voxengo stuff, real good and a good deal.

TC reverbs are the bom (just an expression shrub, in case you're listening)

I like the URS EQ's especially the Neve one had a chance to use it in a studio here and damn near went crazy with the thing...

Word yo. Those Massey plugs kick all possible ass. The new limiter, the compressor, the eq, even the distortion plug kicks ass. Essentially you can demo them as long as you like if you can deal with the lack of bypassing and you don't mind resetting your tweaks everytime. The limiter is the best I've used so far.

I agree. I've stopped using my Waves lin phase multiband and L2 from the masters bundle, both of which I relied on a lot, since trying the Voxengo Soniformer and Elephant. The low price doesn't reflect the sound quality at all.
