Can anyone recommend a pair of good studio monitors? I have been looking at the M-Audio Studiophile BX5 Powered Monitors... budget is from $100 to $300, preferably around $200-250...
thanks.

The Roland DS series have served me well. They have helped in producing some very balanced instrumentals. I have the DS 5s, 15 watt/30 watt active. Price in Australian $700.

For a cheaper monitor, I know over here in Australia the Wharfdale Pro produce a cheaper type monitor, sorry I cant give give you model no's but when I was looking my dealer showed me a pair of Wharfdales, similar wattage and size for a cheaper price.
I gave them a listen, not as clear and the flat response not as great but never the less they were a cheaper monitor.
Don't know if that will help at all.

Diff, do a search here and you'll find that some of us are using the BX5s+sub with excellent results. I use a $100 Wharfedale sub although the dedicated M-Audio sub would certainly be the best fit (but an expensive one). The nice thing about these BX5s, beside the solid mids and highs, is the selection of room-adapability switches, including one for easily adding and integrating a sub. Search for M-Audio BX5+sub both here and via Google. For $200, the BX5s are a sweet deal, but I'd plan on at least another $100-150 for a sub to produce those low freqs that any small speakers just can't offer. You'll end up with one heckuva low-cost monitor system.

Do I NEED subs? i mean ill prolly end up getting some further down the line but for right now could i just get by with just the monitors? BX8's?

is there any significant difference between the bx5's and the bx8's other than the latter being an extra $100?

Search the forum a bit, Diff... lots written here recently about the BX5s, 8s, and subs.
