Hi there,

I'm trying to record my own guitar chord progressions and then burn them onto a CD and use them to work on my soloing. However, it would be helpful if I could figure out how to put Audition into monitor mode without having to actually be recording. I just want to hear my guitar signal and futz with it and only have a fixed amount of computer memory being used.

I'm plugged into my soundcard, an Nvidia GeForce2 MX (dinosaur), through the Mic port because Line In doesn't work for me (not sure if it should). My sound card only has a Line In and Mic input ports. I can record to a file without any trouble. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You need a setup that allows you to monitor from your input box. I'm not familiar with the particular stuff you have, but you need a line out or headphone out to do what you want.

If you double-click on the meters you're in monitor mode in the sense that the meters will start showing the current input levels - is that what you mean?

You have a standard AC97 type soundchip, you need to open it's audio properties (Windows sound mixer - right click the speaker icon on the task bar or Control panel/Sounds...) for Recording and check the input you want to record from. By default, this is usually the Mic. As the mic is mono, that's probably best to plug a guitar into anyway, although neither Mic or Line-in really have a high enough impedance to suit a guitar pickup, might sound a bit dull.

Most AC97 types now have the ability in the Audio Properites playback mixer to have the inputs playing directly back to the speakers - so look for a Mic entry and turn it up or un-mute. If you can't see it, it might be hidden in the properties top menu, look for an "Advanced" item that will show you which controls can be displayed in the mixer.
