I am running xp with a p4 2.4 ghz computer. It's a month old and it is already starting to act up! Now when I start it it stays on a blue screen that says "welcome" until I hit ctrl+alt+del which moves it to my desktop view. It also takes a good minute to boot up where as before it only took 20 seconds it's also sying I have no page memory! Can anybody help me out? If I have to reformat that's fine. Thanks!

Something is definately screwy...You may very well need to reformat and start with a clean install of XP or a repair. I would reformat myself. There is a chance you may have been given a bad hard drive. Im sure you already tried a scandisk on files and surface area right ?

Sounds like a registry problem. I'd do a re-install of Windows just to be sure.

Don't for get to burn everything you want to keep on to cd beforehand though ;)

Okay I'll do that hopefully it works out. Thanks for the advice, I'll let you know how it works out.

STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!

DON'T format!!!!

If it's too late then ....never mind
If you don't mind formatting and installing then.... never mind

But just in case you have not done this yet....

I could tell you where your problems come from and how to prevent it from happening again.....

So, let me know

I've been on the edge of my seat all day waiting for the "phone to ring"! Henry are you there?

I have a Dutch version of XP so it will be a little difficult to translate.
But I'll try.

Your problem with CTRL/ALT/DEL:
Go to Start/Control Panel/System/Security
I don't know for sure if my translation is correct but when you're at security there is a map called "security options".
Open it and surch for the line that contains CTRL/ALT/DEL. Here you can switch it on or off.

Your problem with your pagefile:
On your desktop there's an icon called MY COMPUTER or THIS COMPUTER. Right-click it and choose PROPERTIES. Go to ADVANCED and choose PERFORMANCE. Choose ADVANCED and click on CHANGE at the bottum by VIRTUAL MEMORY. Choose LET WINDOWS DESIDE (or something) and click on APPLY then restart. If LET WINDOWS DESIDE was allready checked then you might have another problem.
Go to explorer and choose properties for your HD. How many space is there left? If it's not enough (less then say 500 MB) then you have to cleanup your HD. Or/and there are some unclosed files witch have to be repared, to do this let windows check the disk.
Tip: If you want to cleanup surch for files bigger than... lets say 5000 kB. Look at these files if you know them and they're not important then delete them with SHIFT/DEL if you don't know them let them be DON'T DELETE FILES WITH EXE/DLL/INI etc. EXTENSIONS you can safely delete files with TMP, IMG, MP3, ZIP etc. but be sure you don't need them! Also empty your recycle bin. And uninstall programs you don't use. You can also get some room by disabeling the SLEEP eeeh thing. Right click on you desktop choose PROPERTIES and then SCREENSAVER and then ENERGY. There you can disable the SLEEP thing.

Last problem, slow start:
First clean up your HD then, run Norton WINDOCTOR or an other checking utility then DEFRAGMENT your HD's

How can you prevent all this from happening again?
Read the help files before you change annything in Windows and frequently clean up, check your system with Norton Utilities or something like that and defragment your HD's.

That's it
Good luck
Henry

That's very nice of you Henry, Thanks! However there isn't a security options in the system folder of the control panel and I can't figure out where the hard drive information is in the explorer properties. I'm using XP home edition.

Henry's diagnostic tests are common, but I think in the end you will still need to reformat and start with a fresh install. Its the best way to wipe registry problems and corrupt files, etc..
That is unless your a PC guru

I'm sorry I can not help you I don't know the exact translation Microsoft is using. And I'm not sure if XP home is the same.
Caleb2438 if you follow my directions it'l take about 10 to 15 minutes. Formatting and reinstalling can take all day. Maybe someone with an english XP version can help you out.

I disagree with you Stealthtech. If you use tools like Norton Utilities and you don't do silly things with your PC you can keep it stable for years. caleb2438 system's only a month old.

Good luck

I Understand....
But, a reformat does'nt take all day...only about 30-40 minutes.
Add another 30 minutes to reinstall personal programs.
In fact, I reformat about once a year just to get rid of the crap buildup. If you know the nitty gritty of a PC I guess you could work at it and get things straight but it would probably take just as much time as it would to reformat {which is a sure fire way to know you got rid of everything bad on your hard drive.}
Now Im curious to see if your instructions fix's his problems. If so, hats off to ya. If not then he's wasted more time digging.

...Piece of cake.

1st, search for file named TpkD in your Windows folder. Just use search function in explorer. Then Delete it. It's safe. Just delete it.

2nd, Start Menu --> Run, type regedit. Search any registry related to TpkD. Delete 'em.

If you're not so sure, you can make a backup first. But I bet it's safe.... Restart Windows...

Booofff... fast boot in no time, and pagefiles will appear.

I HATE REFORMATING AND REINSTALLING WINDOWS.
Done that at least a thousand times. If you say it takes you an hour to do it then I think you're talking about a verry basic installation.
I can't reformat, reinstall windows, drivers, software, plugins, internet, network, getting all the upgrades and service packs etc. in only one hour! Especially not when problems have to be solved during this installation, and before you can reformat you have to be sure there are no precious files being deleted. I think you know what I mean.
It's better to learn to solve your problem and in the first place try to prevent them from happening, rather than whiping it away hoping it wil not apear again, it's much faster. I use Norton for about 18 month now and it's keeping my system stable and clean of errors.

Greetings and have a nice weekend
Henry

WDYM James???
TPkd are some drivers and sys files for a plugin!!!

As you install more crap, the computer boots slower and wierd things sometimes happen. It's called a computer. There is always some sort of conflict. Operating systems are a big mystery even to the people who created them. You basically just have to fuck with it until it works. And then once you install something new that it doesn't like, fuck with it more until it works agian.

...I know, but I'm not sure if it has something to do with music. Can you tell me what is this driver for ?

Actualy, I had a same problem with damn long booting & missing page files issue. WinXP Home, on PIII 866, 256MB, dual 20Gig HD. And the worst, I couldn't access my floppy disk drive. I mess around here and there, and found that my floppy conflicted with TPkd thingee in Control Panel. So I removed it along with any registry related. I live happy ever after without any problem with my system... But just like what I said, make a back up first of your file & registry for sure. I couldn't be responsible for any damage caused by this info. It worked for me, my system & my config. Hope it will help you...
