Uploaded my mix just now, I used Slate VCC on all my tracks, VBC on all my busses and VTM on the master buss to get that clarity and punch. On the master buss, I used SlickEQ just to give my high end a 1dB boost! I used metric halo channel strip 3 on all my tracks, I love this plugin for the eq. And I used McDSP Ultimate Compressor 6030 on all my channels. I used Altiverb reverb(awesome reverb) and lexicon Hall reverb. I also summed my stereo outputs to an old Carvin Concert Series Mixer that added warmth and tighten up the low end and printed it into Pro Tools. Please Enjoy!!

Hello All,
I'm new here. I've just uploaded my mix. I didn't have a lot of time to work on. Only mixed this night and this afternoon.
So I've mixed mostly in the box. I used a LA3A on the verses vocal and a SMC2B on the master with the VBC from slate.
For the reverb I used the exponential Audio R2 @ Phoenix. Feel free to ask me anything else.
But unfortunately my mix is not totally finished.
(Need to look to post my mix here...)
Thanks, and good luck everybody.

I really lik the space and openess of your mix, but i don't like drums. On the very first drum part, it's like we hear only room mikes and this feeling stays all along, more or less. Other than that, i think it's a good job !

I appreciate your honesty. I love the drums. I think the room sound helps give it it's openness. I specifically wanted a room mic feel. The song had an indie rock vibe to it and that retro room mic vibe I thought fit the song very well. Of course in the chorus I with the more modern sub bass line it gets more dance oriented. I could have certainly created two different drum sounds. I may even experiment. I usually don't go too overboard with these contests because they aren't paying gigs. I just got off tour and am waiting for two clients to send me their albums to mix. I just did this more so for practice. :-)

Hey,

betterlate then never ;) I really enjoyed mixing this track. Here's my version of it; I did it completely in the box (Reaper) this time:

First I cleaned up the tracks, removed silent parts did some fades where necessary and applied some high and low cuts after having a roughly leveled mix. I automated volume on different drum stems and on the parallel comp bus where the drums and bass synths ended up. Also sidechained the kick to the compressor on Sub Phatty 1 so it ducks away on heavy hits. Then some EQ automation on the piano just before the breaks.

I mostly used UAD and SoundToys plugins and the Reaper EQ for cleanup tasks.

Channelstrip for vocal tracks: UA 610-B
EQ: Harrison 32C, Pultec, Manley
Dynamics: Fairchild, Teletronix, UA 1176
Reverb: EMT, Lexicon
Modulation: Roland Dimension D, SoundToys Stuff (MicroShift, PanMan, PhaseMistress, FilterFreak1, Crystallizer)
Echo Stuff: Cooper Time Cube
Tools: Precision De-Esser, Little Labs VOG, Ampex ATR-102

The Harrison EQ is very versatile and kind of a go to EQ for me. I use it a lot. Same is th 1176 suite from UA in regard to compression but the Fairchild on some of the vocal tracks. I do some panning on guitars and synth via SoundToys PanMan. Other than that the SoundToys effects are mainly (but sparsely) on vocals depending on the effect I wanted to achieve. I use different blends of Lexicon 224 and EMT 140 Reverb and the Crystallizer Echo to create different environments for different vocal parts.

I hope you enjoy listening to it. I'm looking forward to some critique :)

Best regards,
Tim

Had some fun mixing this track. I basically did a lot of grouping of similar instruments/vocals. On each bus I put a compressor, multiband compressor when needed, Oxford dynamics. On vocals I did a parallel compression channel which consisted of a waves CLA 76, L1 limiter, and a Scheps 73 EQ to brighten it up. All of these went into a pre-master channel with a NLS Channel modeled after the Neve Console, and a J37 tape delay for some sparkle. On the master bus I just had an ozone 5 with a limiter on it and some minor stereo imaging. Enjoy :)

Very well balanced ! Sounds great to me, it's only lacking a bit of space, let say depth.
Would love to know how you used the VOG, one of the plug i tend to love but always remove at the end cause i don't get how to use it properly.

Howlin Mix by Jorge Costa

Mixing this track Howlin was a lot of fun!
First some cleaning, a bit of EQ, roll off some lows and enhance other freqs that need to stand out a bit.
(only one click/pop found on synth bass around bar 90 easily cleaned ).
Find the some fader balance, panning and send it thru a buss compressor to add some glue, making individual instrument stems (5 in total).
Reverb was also used on certain elements do add depth.
Tracks enhancement with Steven Slate VVC, VTM (at 30ips) and oxford inflator.
On vocals; Metric Halo Channel strip (compressor & EQ) & a blend delay on bus.
Master fader: VSL multiband compressor & limiter.

Thank you for the opportunity to mix such well recorded material.

Regards,

JC

It's gonna be fun to hear the 3 winners:-) hopefully we know who they are soon :-)

I wonder how many people entered the contest. :-)

very cool mix! :)

Hi folks,

First time I mixing a song. And I really learned so much.
I tried to make pretty much organic mix.So I didn't do nothing radical with recorded tracks.
Just makeup.
I worked ITB with Waves plugins in Cubase 5 ...Nothing special.
This is very big expirience for me.I really enjoyed mixing though my head exploded :)

Best regards

Here is the mix :

I’m very happy for this contest this song was a bit challenging ;) Everyday I come here theres a lot of new cool mixes. Lots of different approaches and tastes. It should give us to think about our differences in ear perception. Most mixes were done ITB and to me sometimes they sound even better than OTB mixes. Honestly I think it doesn’t matter who will win those plugins cuz I don’t belive they will make you a better mixer. Let’s try to listen as much as we can and learn something good for us. Peace! :)

;) You're absolutely right.

Hey everyone,

I like how active everything is getting here right now!

I gave my mix a tweak in the low end, since i thought it could have needed a bit more weight.

I'm getting a nice RMS of -12, so i think i didn't kill it in mastering. Usually I don't master my mixes, but in this case i thought i'd also give that a shot.

What do you guys think? Love to hear your comments! ;-)

Keep it up & thanks to everyone involved to get this opportunity to mix this lovely tune!
