Hello everybody!

This is my first contest, I hope when it is over, we can listen to everyone's mixes :)

For mine, I used Waves, Sknote, T-Racks plugins on Cubase 7.5. No outboard gear used.

I tried to make it sound as clear as possible and be subtle on FXs, I hope you guys like it and I wish you all good luck!

Btw, the song is catchy and easy to work with, thumbs up for Amber!

Regards,

Fer.

Here is the final mix I entered to the contest.

I really liked this tune and it was nice to get such good quality stems! My mix is definitely an album version (a little on the long side for radio play anyway!). I mixed this in the box in my home studio using SONAR X3 and rendered it to MP3 using SoundForge. Compared to Ben's master, I think that my version is a little more guitar centric but then I'm a guitar player! Love the song! Thanks for the opportunity to work on this one......all around it was a great experience. Best of luck to all of the entrants!

Hi,
Thanks to the people of PureMix (and Homerecording) for share this good piece of music to mix it. I used Pro tools 11, and I decided to mix whitout lisenting the original final mix and master. Just before upload my mix, I checked. The mixes have much in commun, but I preferd do something different with the voices: More dry and present, and a fwe reverse reverb in some points. I usually use for EQ & Dynamics the Channel Strip. I maximized with th Avid Pro Limiter. I hope you like it!

Hey Gabriel,

Mix is a bit harsh I guess, if there is enought time, I would check the high frequencies again (Snare/Hats/Vocals> DeEsser?)

But besides of that I really like the wideness of your mix, seems to be panned right ;)

Best Wishes

Hey Fishmed,

same thing like the post before yours.
Some harsh highs (Synth!!!) Perhaps too low mixing volume?

Hi Some Guy
I'm only a "PC" guy myself, never gotten in to an IMacs before. Now, I have built a lot of computers before, including the one I have now, and have done a lot of things with them, but I've never heard about making a drive out of part of your ram memory. Is this just a Mac thing or can any PC do it? If so, you think if I did a web search on it I'll be able to find how to do this on a PC? Very interesting, would like to check this out. Thanks for letting me know about this.
I don't know the specifics, but I know it is indeed possible on Windows. RAM drives have been around since at least the DOS days. Used to be if you needed more operating system files than could fit on your boot floppy, you could have some of them zipped on the disk to save space, then have your boot scripts make a RAM drive and unzip the files into it. Of course, RAM drives were a lot smaller back in those days 'cause RAM was a lot more expensive than it is now. But these days we have so much RAM that it can be difficult to actually get use out of all of it, so using the extra for files makes sense.

Thanks for the feedback Mountain Lion. I intended for the highs to be up in the mix, perhaps compared to the other mixes, it may sound harsh.

Hi guys;

I'm João Alves, 22 years old. Madrugador, Early Bird in Portuguese is my NickName Student since I can remember. I'm currently studying Sound Engineering in Portugal, it's my first year of the course. I 'm also running a humble Mastering Studio here, despite all this crisis, I cannot complain.

Only knew about this mixing contest a little time ago so I spent the last two days mixing Howlin. I apologize for any little thing, my ears are a bit "toasted" :)

I loved mixing this song, it was a very good experience. Well I mixed the song pretty much ITB using my stock plugins that come with Logic Pro, also used the DeEsser from FabFilter, apart from that I just used the STC-8 from Crane Song to process dynamically the vocals in both verses and that's it. For Mastering, in the analog domain I only used a very tiny compression on the STC-8 and the HPF and the Pultec section on the 232P EQ from BetterMaker. In the Digital Domain I used the Linear Phase Equalizer from Logic, the digital emulation of Tape on HEDD from Crane Song and the ePure Limiter II from Flux.
I mastered it dynamically with about 12dBs of dynamic range.

Thanks guys for organizing this, hope that everyone had fun mixing it.

Best,

João Alves.

I just tried nudging them together and you're right, it makes the sample blend in way better. I think this will allow me to rely less on reverb and more on the sample to get what I was after. If I get time.
Just uploaded a mix with revised snare sound. Thanks again Daniel Y for the tip. It got me past where I was stuck.

EDIT: Could anyone else not get the dog FX or ending Vocal adlibs files to work? Im disappointed cause that ending vox adlib is huge. But i did what i could.

This was such an amazing experience! THANK YOU!

I just uploaded mine, still not 100% satisfied, but this being my first mix contest i have learned SO much in the process, and am settling with what i have due to time constraints. The stems were great and were a lot of fun to work with.

The recording of everything was great so I didn't overdue it. I used stock Studio One plugins as well as Waves plug-ins. A little tape delay here and there, some fine eq'ing and touch up on certain things. I really wanted to try to leave the song sounding nice and spacey and wide open, as if you were standing outside howlin at the moonlight! Lol.

I really hope you like it and wouldnt mind some constructive feedback.

Amber Skye- you have a new fan! And thank you to the creators of this project. It has REALLY been a learning experience for a new comer who doesnt get to mix this many tracks very often. I did the best i could and hope you like it.
Im sure those Sonnox plug-ins could take my sound to the next level! :} Thanks again.

This was my first time to be a part of one of these and I will say it was a lot of fun. I tried a lot of new techniques and learned so much. I always want to deliver the best mixes I can but regardless of winning I really like where I was able to take this song and how it turned out. One thing I did that I have never tried before is that I did most of my volume control and "automation" with compression and eq only. The only actual automation I used was for clean up. Beyond that the faders never moved. Very interesting experiment. I also got a chance to test some of the sonnox plugin and I really do dig them. Thanks to those that made this happen and I look forward to the next one!

Hi
I mixed the track with Protools HD 10.3.8 with UAD, Waves, Line6, SPL, and digidesign plugins and some outboards: H3000 SE, M1 TC electronic, Manley Vox Box, and UREI 1178.
I think there are too much FX like reverse crash and Co.
I liked the voices and the Ebow.
Thanks for all.

Thanks for listening. Indeed my mix is a little more open. It was my choice for impact. It can be interpreted as little harsh, you are right. Tested on phone mono speaker it was ok, laptop - tablet ok, some ultra fancy high end system of a friend - Wilson Puppy 7, Accuphase, etc. sounded ok, my car - a little open but ok. You are right about that "little harshness". It is there.

I mixed this in Pro Tools with my Adam S2x speakers. I used my favorite Massenburg DesignWorks EQ, Waves compressors and Lexicon reverbs. This song was well produced and I really had fun doing this.

CATCH ME IF YOU CAN! ;)

edit:
I did a quick tweak to main vocals with Manny Marroquin EQ and tried to give it a little bit warmer character.
Feel free to comment whatever comes to your mind.
Greetings from Finland.

Hi!

Here my mix:

Is pretty straight forward, since I tried to keep the vocals up and present, creating an ambience around them.

I used some harmonic distortion and saturation to get the tones and character for some of the tracks, like the drums or the synths.

I used mostly delays, except a couple of throws for a plate reverb.

Cheers!

E.

My approach was to keep it simple,so I did all the mixing "in the box'' using REAPER as DAW and it's REAPER native plugins and JS efx.The only 2 exceptions are VARIETY OF SOUND Baxter EQ and BOOT EQ ,which were inserted on the main bus.No compression or limiting was used on the main bus.

Last day last tweak! LOL!!!

Thoughts?

I really lik the space and openess of your mix, but i don't like drums. On the very first drum part, it's like we hear only room mikes and this feeling stays all along, more or less. Other than that, i think it's a good job !
