The song is Stuck with MTV

My question is, why can't i get my vocals to sound deeper. I am using a cad c195 condesor with another omnidirectional about 5 feet away (which i was told can help capture timbre)

The low end is turned up up up on the vocal track, but it just sounds like there is no warmth. Anybody have an idea?

Also, what do you think of the song? Any improvements to be made?

I appreciate all the feedback.

Sean

Don't know how to make it warmer, but i think you could bring the vocals forward a touch and reduce the reverb quite a bit. Everything else sounds ok to me. Play around with EQ at all levels and not just low and you probably find something you like, and if not then rerecord it and try and sing it with more warmth, lol. Also, listen to the riff, think about it, have you heard it before? Where? EVERYWHERE!!! Everyone uses it. Sorry, i should just criticize the recording.

I guess I should have mentioned.

I record what I record becuase one day I want to work in a studio. I have no talent yet, but I am slowly but surely learning this stuff. I realize those 4 chords are just about the most played out, but I'm getting good experience mixing against other bands that sound similar.

But I appreciate your feedback regardless of whether you think it is trite.

Nice sound for all instruments - guitar/bass/drums. Mix is good except when the (first) quiet part starts - the mix seems to move left a bunch - mainly cause that's where the guitar is? On headphones it sounds too hard panned and distracting- just nit pick or my 2c. Other than that this mix sounds great.
Although you have probably tried to EQ some bass into the vocals during mixing, they sound pretty good the way they are. Usually you'll want to roll off some bass anyway.

I'm in the same boat mate. Just started, actually i haven't even started yet, lol, well properly. I've recorded a couple of demos on shit equipment. Now I'm building my studio. I think the mix sounds great, vocals just need to be brought up slightly and lose a little reverb, in my opinion.

Bring your vocals up the slightest bit. They are dead nuts on for this type of music. The whole nasal midrangy vox are kinda the product of singing like a girl!(sorry, I am in the same boat as you for musical style!). You may wanna bring the guit up the slightest bit too!

Yeah, I've always had that problem. my voice sounds good in the middle, but i end up having to capo a guitar halfway up the neck.

Anyway, I will pull the vox up tonight. It sounds great in the speakers I mixed them with (just RCA bookshelfs) but in headphones it sounds really bassy and muddy.

sweet man, I love the ska breakdown right before the solo. But I don't know shit, I just think it sounds good.

i dug the tune dude. the only thing i'd say is the vocals are low. the reverb works on this type of song i think.

Ok, the reason you can't get your vocals to sound "deeper" is that your singing is very nasal. Try getting the sound to come from your throat and not the nose. This is a common issue that can usually be resolved by lots of _loud_ throaty singing in the car. Singing louder makes more air flow and helps tone. Also, go try out some diaphragm mikes at your local music shop. Play around in there and find out what works.

I like it, even with the vocals as is, they could be louder and perhaps some compression would fix them.

OK guys, I just updated the MP3, let me know how the mix sounds. I brought the vocals up, and brought mids up on just about everything (makes the mix sound cleaner). give me your feedback.

Thanks so much,

Sean

i like it... vocals are a little nasaly.. and lil too reverbed (esp for punk)
guitar could still come up a little... over all it does sound sweet though.. snare is effin tight...
did you record this digitally.? if so you should remove the guitar hiss right before the song starts... or if analog.. delay the fade in for a second.. mtv and its audiences should eat this sh1t up..
