What mic should I buy to get a really punchy (not that bassy) kick drum sound? My budget is $200.

Eric (and I already have tuned it perfectly)

Yep Yep, Beta 52's the ticket. Now you're on the trolly.

Some of the best, most punchiest drum tracks I've heard are from America's "You can do magic" (gotta crank the volume for it, though..but you can really feel it!)
And Loggins & Messina's "Your mama don't dance and your daddy don't rock & roll"

Any thoughts? Any ideas what those guys used?

Isaiah

Don't forget the judicious use of a decent compressor to highlight the snap of a kick drum attack!

a sennheiser 421 seems to work well for me
new about 299
around 200 used...shouldnt be too hard to find

anyone use or heard the nady drum pac? They are really inexpensive but that kind of worries me....Think I'll go with the beta 52

Sennheiser e602 $200 i've used it before and have gotten good results placing it real close to the beater for that punchy attack sound.

I'd have to say the beyer M-88 is probably about the best. ATM 25 is also pretty damn punchy. If you get the M-88 you have the added bonus of owning probably the best guitar amp mic that money can buy. Much more fuller sounding than the SM-57's
