The COMPOSER PRO-XL MDX2600

" Whether you’re recording, mixing or mastering, the COMPOSER PRO-XL MDX2600 gives you total dynamic control. It includes all of the features you would expect from a reference class compressor—plus a voice-adaptive de-esser, a new dynamic enhancer, authentic tube emulation and much more. These are some of the indispensable tools for producing clean, consistent audio with virtually no loss in signal quality."

2nd place receives

The 3630 Compressor™
RMS/Peak Dual Channel Compressor/Limiter with Gate

"Since its introduction, the 3630 Compressor™ has become the most popular dynamics processor ever made. The reason is easy to understand: it provides two independent full-featured compressor/ limiters in one rack space while offering excellent sonic quality for any application from studio recording to live sound or broadcast. The 3630 offers Ratio, Threshold, Attack and Decay controls to customize its compression response for even the toughest signals. You can also choose between RMS and Peak compression styles, plus Hard and Soft Knee dynamic curves for every application from subtle gain control to in-your-face punch. As an independent dual-channel compressor, the 3630 offers separate controls for two different source signals. Plus, two fully independent gates with threshold and rate controls allow you to easily and efficiently stifle unwanted ambient noise. Other advanced dynamics processing features such as precise signal metering, a sidechain for keying or ducking effects and stereo linkable operation make the 3630 the most powerful compressor in its class."

Our judges this time around will be

Mshilarious
Reshp1
Bennychico
Noisedude

Sonixx will be handling the uploads page for entries, much thanks to him for doing that tedious job!!

Also, and very importantly, be sure to state in your post if it is your "Final Mix" or it is a "Mix For Review"
(If you forget this step, ill yell at you, and that lacks in the "fun" department)

NL5 will be again hosting the files. Also if you need to post your mix you can use www.lightningmp3.com to do so.
Also if the download is too large for your connection NL5 has graciously offered to send the files on a disk to your home free of charge!!!
Pretty cool huh?
Heres alink to his Mailbox http://www.homerecording.com/bbs/member.php?userid=24593

I personally give great thanks to these six individuals for the help, its much appreciated!

The dead line for receiving entries will be set at a later date.
Im doing this because there are always some late comers and i dont want to leave them out.
Ill announce deadlines on a separate thread when the time comes.

Finally i hope all of you help each other out by reviewing each others mixes!
This is important.

"take the time to do a review"

That way youll get more reviews when you post your mixes.
Simple huh?

Here's the link, take care and enjoy folks!

I'm ready to judge some awesome mixes people...so work hard on 'em!
I'd do the whole "not listen to the song before you hear the entries" thing, but I'm achin' to mix this stuff on my own. :D

Good luck alls

p.s. can anyone else believe this is #12 already??? wow.

Wow. I had an urge to come check if this was posted yet. Awesome!

LoL, didn't someone joke that first prize would be Behringer, second prize, Nady. Pretty damn close. :D. Looking forward to judging.

On that note; judges--I will be compiling a list & CD with all the final entries (not everybody uses NL5 for hosting), so if you need me to send a CD, PM me. I will also create the scorecard in Excel.

Contestants, I will again publish a list of final entries including post # with a day to go, so be sure to check back and verify your info.

What are the deadlines anyway?

I am also going to offer a judge's choice award: To whomever scores highest on my card, you get framed posters of JS Bach and Beethoven!

Also, a last place prize (for all judges' scores): a used (disinfected) Hohner Blues Band harmonica, so you can play yourself some blues :p

i think Fin said he'd post it at a later date.

If you don't want to mail out CDs to us, I could just download a ZIP folder just as easily if someone was to put it together. Up to you. But I will take you up on that score card.

To all contestants too, depending on the number of entries, as a judge I will also try and offer individual critiques on your entries. I'll take notes as I listen to them, score your mix, and then type up individual critiques to post here. If anyone here prefers NOT to be critiqued/commented on or would prefer me to send your critique via PM instead of making it public, please tell me when you post your link. I think this will help people understand why I believe they deserved the score that I gave.
I will only critique FINAL mixes too...I will not comment/listen to any "work in progress" mixes (to be fair to everyone else).

Hmmm . . . critiquing is cool, but what if somebody wants to change their 'final' mix after a comment?

Anyway, I wouldn't score the mixes as you go along, you'll want to listen to all of 'em together to make sure your scoring is consistent.

Agreed.

Its much easier to discern a great mix when its aginst a not so great one.

I just want to treat each mix as it's own mix. Not even worry that the next mix I'm going to listen to after might not even compare to So-and-So's. I understand what you mean though by keeping a consistency...as in what does a 5 sound like and what does a 0 sound like. This all goes back to personal opinion on some of this though, doesn't it. I know all the judges in the past have said they don't base it on personal opinion, but it's hard not to. If a 1 is given for "air" or "low end" in a mix....the person who mixed it might think it's the perfect amount, but the judge thinks otherwise. This is where the critiquing comes in. You explain how much you think is enough air or too much low end. Give suggestions as in "check your monitoring situation" or "listen on some other speakers"

again, i want to treat them all individually. My critiquing idea goes back to my musical background. I guess having mostly a classical/jazz background, where I went to many solo and large ensemble competitions...we got ranked and critiqued at the same time by the judges. So I'm doing that approach. If someone wants to change their mix after getting critiqued, then they should do so...it will help them learn (after all, isn't this what these competitions are for?). Plus it will also help them learn what they can fix in the next competition. Of course, we all know what professional mixes sound like and even have Finster's a reference for this one.

But like I said, if more people here feel the same way finster and mshilarious do, let me know and I'll can the whole idea and just do it the way everyone else is. :)

So someone's posting the contestants' mixes to the UK?

I reckon I'll just have to book some time on the old broadband router. But if it means I end up with a diseased harp, I won't be happy!

Just will someone please, please PM or email me when I'm supposed to be doing something? I don't want to miss out on this.

No, I am making a different point. There are two basic ways of judging: objectively, meaning that you score any mix against a theoretical ideal; or subjectively, meaning that you score the mixes against each other.

You can use either method you are comforable with.

I would be more concerned with the effect of the time lag on scoring and the limited experience judding when you do the first couple of mixes. Let's say you hear a really good mix and score it an 8. Then you hear another mix that did certain edits better, but is sonically about the same and you figure that's a 9. Then you hear a better mix and you have to give it a 10. Then Massenburg enters the contest

At least if you're gonna score along the way, wait until you have a half-dozen or so to start, and revisit your top 10 again at the end.

If you prefer :)

Strictly all you have to do is judge the final mixes; however, if you'd like to listen to rough mixes and comment along the way, that's always welcome.

I understand what you're saying.
Alright, I'll just listen first in random order and critique, and then score as I relisten.
Gonna take a little longer, but for you guys....anything ;)
