... guitar through a little pignose with a 57 AND then that same guitar through the Pignose as preamp into a Marshall Superbass MkII into an Etone 200W single cone into the 57 into a bluetube pre.
That's some chain :)
singlespeak - less harsh/metallic?
Yes, better still than the second version. I mean I think you pretty much kept the jangler at the start, but then at 0:06 there's this second one that comes to its rescue and then they start dancing together, that's a good idea. Throughout the song the guitars are starting to sound really good to me. I'd try to remove a bit more metallic sound but I think we're in the area of subjective appreciation now. Synthy seems to have retreated again though, or maybe it just wasn't really doing what I thought it was.

Very interesting build up at the beginning, Ray! I only listened to the 3rd link, and everything seems very tame. Nothing stands out as needing much work. Nice and balanced. I'd like to hear this with the lyrics / melody.

My one nit, is the snare. It's got the round anti-snap sound, but it's so round, it's almost unidentifiable against the kick. Listening on headphones (now sub-freqs), the snare and the kick sound almost identical.

Other than that, I really liked the landscape provided. Get some singin' in there!

bjorg,
Thanks mate. Succinct is good!
VomitHatSteve,
the noises you refer to are generates by an old effect - it's called Soft Focus & is from a Yamaha FX500 unit. I've tweaked it a bit but that's its essence. I'll work on the R gtr but don't want the track to be completely neutered.
singlespeak,
Yeah, ch ch chain of fools maybe! The Pignose, when working properly, disconnects the speaker when you take a line out of the back & jab it into another device. Mine doesn't decouple as nothing I have works quite right.
The synthy effects are less as I've reduced the aspects of the gtrs that trigger them to achieve the clarity requested.
PoeticIntensity,
yeah, the snare at the drum intro has some snap but it was recorded & treated differently to the stereo kit from the drum machine. (oh, sorry Roland - Rhythm Composer). I have the lyrics, the singer has them too. Now I wait. thanks for the detail.

Yup, the clarity is improving ray...:)

The effect trailing off at the end is way cool and to the extent that it is present throughout the tune, I wish I could hear more of it. The metallic digital fizz of the opening jangle still bugs me a bit, but as mentioned it becomes less noticeable as things progress...

These comments are for the newest mix:

The intro guitar might turn people off. It's a bit annoying. Sounds Pink Floydy. I think the tambourine is a bit prominent. That's pretty much it.

Yeah the intro guitar is the only thing that doesn't want to sit with me. Otherwise I like the wall of sound you've got going. I quite like the old drum machine on this too. Good arrangement and progressions

heatmiser,
I'll take all the VSTs off the intro guitar for the remix tomorrow - let me know how that sounds.
squibble94,
Hmm, hadn't dealt with the ta,bourine yet - it became more obvious as I stripped away other bits. I'll deal with it.
Bulls Hit,
Ta mate. Check back for guitar update. yeah, I quite like the old TR505 m'self.

Most recent mix - 11/07/10.
I've removed most of the FX on the offensive intro guitar.
Boosted the FX on the howling guitar (the one that ends up droning out at the end)
Fixed a little prob with the bass in 1 spot.
Brought the tambourine down some more - moy need even more though!
Mix it in 24 & did a faux master (a little bitsy bit of EQ, a toucch of glaceverb, a limiter & just the tiniest touch of max) in 24 as well before rendering it to 16 & then rendering that to a 224 MP3 (I know - it should be 320 BUT it took over an hour to upload the 8 megs as it was).
Any more suggestions?

Cool. From my perspective, this one is a big improvement. Nice work.

I am better able to hear all of the guitar parts and FX now, and somehow I think that what you've done with the guitars has brought the bass forward a bit which I like. The tambo is better now too.

When the growling guitar first comes in, it almost sounds like a low moaning chorus of singers or something...cool.

My guess is you'll continue tweaking, but this now sounds like I imagined it when I first heard this tune, so I'm happy at least ;) :).

It sounds better now. That intro guitar is still weird though. Whatever, if it sounds good to you, keep it. :) The bass is really audible now. The tambourine doesn't pop out AS MUCH, but I think this will sound a lot better with vox.
