PSP Vintage Warmer - did it help?

Hello Rod,
Def. premastering.
In fact the mix is reasonably settled but I wanted to know if there was anything more that could be done - other than adding tambourine!
I don't "master" my own stuff and only send stuff off to be done if the song/recording/mix combo if fairly strong & worth the expense.
As previously stated: I don't have the ears for serious tweaking.
I'd heard/read about the "warmer" so wanted to know if it offered anything.
When sending for mastering I only send what was essential for the mix - & the MEs have def made it clear what isn't needed.

For others reading here's a quote from the PSP site:
The PSP VintageWarmer2 is recommended for mastering purposes and groups or master busses only.

Sorry man, I really have no desire to listen to what is written as description of a plug. I own many PSP plugs (love 3 of them), and never saw that comment nor would I listen to it if it were in their sales pitch.

Again, I did not mean to come across as an opinionated asshole, I just gave my opinion.

I find great use of Vintage Warmer, Echo, and NobleQex from PSP.

I do find the Qex useful on a master bus previous to a limiter.

I feel I stated something that offended you in a previous post. I did not mean to be a dick. I was only stating what I have found to work for me.

It was not my intention to say what you should do man.

I wasn't trying to be a 'Engineer'

I really like the vintage warmer. Sometimes it's exactly what you need for a particular track. I have never tried it on a stereo mix before though

Fuck what PSP says, they don't know their own products.

Would you rather listen to somebody who's selling the product or the thousand of people that use it?
The VS2 Warmer works great on individual tracks. Not everything needs to be saturated.

I love your songs rayc

I think I belong with the camp saying that the mix sounds better with the plug, but maybe the vocals got hit a little too hard. I'm starting to develop a little pain impulse in my ears, and it was triggered a little by the naked mix, but not with the plug. Still very hard for me to articulate.

I went through a period where I was putting UAD's SSL bus compressor on the outputs in my DAW on just about every mix. More recently, no. Still more recently I'm playing with outboard mix bus compression (API 2500 and I've tried to CL1Bs), and sometimes it works, but only with really light compression. But yeah, as Greg was saying, for stuff that's going to get mastered I take everything off. Then spend another 3 hours trying to make it sound better because I don't want to be embarrassed, then I give up and send it anyway.

Jimistone,
Thnaks mate.I tried it on the stereo buss because it said I could. I have no real experience with the VST other than what you've heard. Interestingly is suggests use on main buss, sub groups & then indiv things like guitar but vocals aren't mentioned. Odd really.
Schwarzenyaeger,
Well, I was responding to a comment about where it wasn't supposed to be. I have limited knowledge & experience and balance the views offered giving more creedence to the opinons of those I know & trust than to newbies or folk I have no experience with. Intetestingly in the recently posted interview with mix engineer Joe Carrolle he states, having come from a tape background, that his template has a tape saturation on each track before starting a project. Usage varies as do tastes and ears.
antichef,
Thanks for the comp. You could be employed as a pay for pain avoidance mix engineer! You've responded with what I asked for. You hear the PSP mix as better. Done. I can check the vox and try to ensure they aren't hit as hard (remove anything that might poke it up before the PSP). Ditto re mastering - reverb & comp etc off the stems/subs and the master buss is clean. Have to leave room for the ME. Funny about the time spent trying to compensate for the loss of those things - I do it too. I've opted now for sending along with the naked .wav an MP3 of the mix with stuff on it as an example of how I want it to come out, kinda sorta!
