I am so curious how colorful meeks sound, how clean Grace101 sounds, how DMP 2/3 sound?

Here is the list, but you can add whatever you got if you like:

En-voice
Presonus MP20
Joe Meek
Grace101
Focusrite voicemaster/penda

and compare them to some common pres, say, Mackie boards' pres or behringer board's pres (I wanna see how well behringer cloned Mackie lol), ART, AudioBuddy or whatever basic pres you got with the same mic

to be as simple as possible, why don't we plug mic directly into pre, bypass every other feature on the pre, into your soundcard, wav., mp3, then post online. Sound source wise...umm...speaking? singing? dog barking?? i dunno, whatever you think you can get with consistency cuz you would be micing it twice w/ dif pres.

Please participate, I am sure there are so many of us wanting to hear these. THANK YOU! :D

Nice tune! This is actually my first time hearing any mic with Audio Buddy, they sure sound way more than they cost

LongWave:
Whoever did that vocal is a lovely singer, period. IS there any way for you to solo the track w/out effects? and which mic was it??

keep on posting, guys :D I am all excited now

I have a C1 and behringer mixer's pre, but don't have any vocal track recorded yet. Hopefully I will have some to post soon.

Thanks. For $80, I think I got two nice utility channels. I'm in the market right now for a better pre and I'm looking at a Grace 101 and an Earthworks Lab 101.

Hi,

i can solo the vocals , but only if i have some time do it . things are pretty hectic at long wave!

as for the mic...i tried 3 before i used that particular one, all of a very hi end. i tried out a U87, a Solid Tube and an AT mic which was given to me to review for someone. out of all the mics i tried, the AT mic suited her voice perfectly. sounded gorgeous. i later found out it was the AT3035, and at an extreemly low £200.

little lesson when picking mics , use your ears, not your bank accounts!

the singer is AMy Phillips. she is an artist on my label. allthough, it looks like some major labels are pretty interested in her.

i will see if i can solo that vocal for you, allthough it will be with effects and backing vocals. I made a cd with her acapellas a while ago so ill just rip it off there.

later guys

first off, this is a good song. the strongest thing is the lyric. while i was listening, a female singer that wants me to produce her walked in and said, "let me sing that." that's a pretty good compliment. that's why i asked as she'd like to record it.

the production choices and arrangement are good. to my personal tastes, i think i'd make different ones. i'd speed it up just a smidge (maybe). i'd try to arrange the song to give it more dynamic. i see possibilities from it which to me makes it a very good demo.

you guys are a good songwriting team. keep writing together.

hi,

im not sure if you were asking me for my permission for you to record the song?

if so, i cant let you sorry, the song is being released here in UK very soon once we re-record. the project is in an early stage so i dont think it's appropriate right now.

thanks for the review!

when you talk about more dynamics, in what parts and how? the drums are compressed a fair bit which may be what you're talking about.

we're working on a more upbeat track (if you wanna hear the rough backing track, go to
(with capitals).

it's only a rough track, with no vocals. just some of the ideas put together, but you get a vibe of whats to come. if you lift this backing track for your singer, I WILL hunt you down and sue the shit off you!! anyway, it's still rough, so you could probably do better at the moment.

once again, thanks for the review!

when it's first released notify me and i may still be interested in recording it then.

if you want some private feedback, then i'd be more than happy off the forum so you won't have to post stuff up publicly.

anyhow, on the what i need song. i think what you've done is really good. it's a matter of execution more than anything. give me a day to think of two to three things that are probably fixable without a lot of hassle to bring out what you got. and, yes, part of what i was talking about is the drums.

hi,

ill only really consider letting you record it if the whole amy project takes off in the way i want it to. because up until that moment, we will be using What I Need as part of the promotional material for her.

thing is, regarding dynamics, everything i did on that track was becuase it was the way i percieved the track to sound like. the compression was on the drums purposely to limit the dynamics, i wanted the rhythmic patterns of the drums to come out more and drive the song a little more.

check out the backing track for the new song ifyou can.

i dont mind you posting feedback here. not at all:-0

LongWave:

I just listened to "what I need" again more carefully, and I have noticed 2 things that I, personally would change a little tinny bit. Before I make any comments, just to tell you that I can not produce a piece anywhere near your quality, but, just a couple thought as a general audience:

1) The intro piano, I am not sure if you are trying to create a mood or something, but I think it might sound better if it had a bit more lows.
2) The transaction from verse 2 to Chorus: I think something is missing there...couldn't really tell what it was at first, after listening that part 5-6 times, "I think", maybe it needs a little more dynamic change there? perheps bring the volume of the last major of the drum down a bit right before it goes into the chorus?

Again, I am no expert here, but, I really like your music/mix

may I ask how you processed the bass line? I really like it even tho I don't listen to a whole lot of R&B

once you release it, you've lost the right to control who records and releases it. you may have done that already but since i'm a writer as well i'll go with your wishes. the girl that came in was just excited b/c she's been begging me to write some material for her and thought i finally got around to it. i'll take her enthusiasm as a compliment to everyone concerned.

last time i did this a very good canadian band sent me their song for a new mix. i should keep my mouth shut. ;)

suggested mix change number 1: take out the britney spears treatment on the asides. do something else with the asides. just experiment around. maybe have a male rapper/vocalist come in and do them?

the new backing track i don't like as much as the song. one thing at a time...

the hi piano part was there so that when the bass came in, it sounded a little bigger, ifyou get me.

ill check that chorus transition out. it's way past re-mixing stage really, i only just finished mastering it a few weeks ago.

personally, im not too happy with the way ive comped the vocal. i didin't pay much attention to breathing really.when we re-record it, ill do that more carefully.

lol, regarding the bass line, i had loads of different options. i had a bass part actaully played on a guitar, mic'd, di'd, bass preamps, the lot. then i had the option of a bass sound off the korg trinity, also a korg prophecy, i liked another sound off a triton, but d'you know what the final bass sound came from?

lol, a Yamaha TX81Z....basically, the TX is 8 DX7's in a rack, so it's all FM synthesis!! it's not even a bass sound, i just did some manipulation. it's the Zither patch on it, which i keep coming back to again and again. basically, if you send the patch a lower velocity note (say , a value of 50), it removes a lot of hi frequencies, so, i literally eq'd a lot of middle out and put it through a DBX 286 preamp and gave it a bit more punch. but in essence, it's just Fm synthesis! the part has quite a few slides in it which i did with the pitchbend and edited later for more accuracy.

feel free to ask any more questions!

ozraves...sorry mate, but i dont understand what you mean by asides...are you reffering to the telephone sounding vocals. if so, i would personally prefer to rot in a gutter than to have a male rapper on that track. see, this is where preference and perception of track comes into play. im not suggesting that it's a bad idea at all, it's just that both of us have different ideas for the song. i personally dont think it would suit the song to have anyone else but a female voice on that track.

but then again, someone might be able to pull it off. depends on your production in some cases. ive given that mix a very feminine approach, if that's possible. y'know, the piano kinda guides it that way. am i making sense? probbaly not, it's half eleven at night and ive been mixing all day!

what you call the telephone thing i call the britney spears thing. it's so overused right now. i thought about this track on the way home. i think i'd just leave it alone on second thought. really, the track is good enough for what it is. don't you think?

i apologize for kind of misdirecting this thread.

please any more examples of other pres. i'm looking for something with a 3d feel. any grace 101 people want to post a clip?

Ozraves, what sound card did you cut that vocal on and what software too, if you please.

I liked the sound of it and want to see what other variables are in place before I opt for the Audio buddy.
