ProTools24 MIX

I had a friend print out the PDF manual for me and kept it by the computer for a few months. And by the bed for night time reading. After a while you pick up ways of working that work for you. And use it every chance you get and when you find yourself wondering how to do something, or do it more efficiently, hit them manual- its pretty comprehensive even if its completely dry. Or use PDF's and the search function in Preview.

As for forums, this one still manages to answer most questions for me. There's the DUC, of course- but read it a while before posting much. Digi has interesting rules and can rather agressively moderate its forum. There's a lot of whining going on there, but *tons* of good info, too. Use the search and you'll likely turn up what you need.

Then there's the ProToolsForum. Not too much posting going on there, yet, but its a good place to help get going:

just wait until Pro Tools 7 ships....there is going to be a ton of new stuff to learn. I feel like I need to buy it just to keep current with the new Digi stuff. They're incorporating a lot of new and interesting things this time around (except two important things that everyone wants, but I guess you can't have everything).

the DUC is very informative, but at the same time can seem overwhelming. If you have a very techy question, that's a good place to go. If you're looking for more of a smaller atmosphere with some cool people ( ;) ) there's the http://www.protoolsforum.com (erase the "board" in the name and you'll see the main site with some articles and PT news/tips). You'll get some good answers from people there too. It was originally started for people who run LE.

Chris: I got the Digi 002 and I'm definitely liking it. I've only had it for about a week, but to my ears both the convertors and preamps are a step up from my Aardvark Q10.

I'm running version 6.9.2...looking forward to 7 coming out. Since I know next to nothing about PT right now, I figure the more learning the better. Bring on the new version!

I just did my first live drum recording last night in PT, and it went oh so smoothly. None of the problems I used to run into with my Aardvark. It's hard for me to believe that after 2.5 years of recording that's the first live drum recording I've done. Just took me a LONG time to get enough mics.

I'll post a clip tomorrow if anyone's interested.
 
I was just at Full Compass lastnight for their seminar on ProTools, they were domonstrating ver. 7, I was all sold on it till I found out it won't do surround without spending extra, and it doesn't do OMF without spending extra, for now I'm sticking with Sonar as it does both and I'm getting into film soundtracks. I'll get it eventually but just not now.

that's how Pro Tools LE has always been. Surround is standard in the HD units though. It can be done with the 002 but in a sort of round about way.
Yeah it sucks that the DV Toolkit isn't included but then again not everyone does post, especially LE users.
 
Whadda ya wanna know about it? :)

Its the PT version for M-audio gear. Its more or less the same thing as LE, except that the DV toolkit doesn't work with it and you need an iLok to run it. There may be other differences, but I'm not really all that up on it.
