Protools much better than PC stuff ?

OK, I'm analog fan, but however, PC VST plugins effects always sound to me more like toys than professional production tools. I may not know the best quality plugs around avaliable for PC but I do know most of them and they all sound to me like non professional tools. My friend's protools effects DOES sound professional level. Do I miss something ? Are there VSTs that compare to the Protools hardware ?
 
...It used to be like that. Back in few years ago, I agree. But nowdays, I think this statement ain't no valid anymore. Hi quality plugins conjunction with better PC is doing fine. Leaves no room for us to worry about the quality it can reach. Now we can say...

I din't know about that. I have a good many "modern" plugins I use in direct X for Vegas pro and I don't like any of the reverbs so far. The ultrafunk 'verbs are alright but the rest are crap IMO. The compressors while being technically fine aren't exactly musical sounding. I almost always prefer to track with effects or buss them in after the fact from outboard gear. "Accoustic mirror" is the best way to simulate room sound in Direct X that I've heard yet. I've used many and am still not a huge fan. One thing that sucks is that sometimes the mix will sound great with plugins until the render to two track and I go "what? did I do that?". Things change...it's kinda spooky.
 
Pro Tools (TDM) has the whole line of McDSP (www.mcdsp.com)effects (compressors, eqs, and multiband) which pretty much smoke Waves and all the other players I've heard. And you can get a few really good Reverbs on TDM, most notably Lexicon's LexiVerb (which sounds like a Lexicon, obviously) and Digidesign's ReverbOne, which sounds (some say) even more like a Lexicon than LexiVerb. Other than that, most of the plugins available are the same. It might just be that you heard the Pro Tools system through a better montioring setup... or it might just be that your friend is a better producer.
 
i recently discovered some plug-in effect that blow the pants off of hardware...even in the reverb department.

I've heard that the best sounding and most realistic reverb on the planet comes out of a dsp plug-in called AltiVerb. check out the demos at http://www.audioease.com/Pages/Altiverb/AltiverbMain.html

it sounds amazing! Too bad it's only available for mac G4s.

Runner up (which i use) is Waves Truverb plug-in...you can design your room from scratch with this thing and it sounds better than any of my hardware reverbs.
 
The front end is the most important, preamps, convertors, etc. Then the monitoring system, then the computer software. Is your friend using the same frontend and monitoring system?
