When I start Protools up all goes well untill it comes to SDS applications/utilities or somesuch. Sorry forgotten exact term. The green percentage downloaded box reads about 75% when it stops ; the result is the PC is frozen. I have no mouse mobility, cant turn the PC off, nothing ! The only way I can unstick the PC is to pull out the mains plug.

As well as that symptom, when starting Protools it goes through the start up ok,then the screen goes black and the PC restarts itself over and over again. When I first started using Protools I had the first problem a few times, but after re booting the PC the DAW started ok. I havnt used Protools for a month. Last time I used it,it was working ok.

I,ve tried re installing LE 7 and tried starting up in safe mode, unfortunatly in safe mode, the interface isnt found. Andy.

That's certainly a strange one!

First thing to do is clear all pro tools preferences. If you're not sure how to do that, give it a google.
It's a pretty common first port for PT users.

Unfortunately I cant access Setup or any other functions as Protools wont start,it gets stuck before it opens. You know when you click on the Protools icon,it opens the Protools Window, then below the toolbar there is a smaller black window where various "messages" flash on and off. Like DAE loaded etc. It gets stuck on SDS etc. Totally frozen. Sorry I cant describe it better,I can play music, but PC's baffle me, Andy

You don't need to get in to pro tools to trash the preferences.
Seriously, give it a google. ;)

There's every chance there's a big problem somewhere, but the first thing to do is clear preferences.
It has saved me a hell of a lot of troubleshooting time in the past.

If it get's stuck loading a particular plug every time, you could try removing that too.
Where they're stored is operating system dependent, but again it's an easy one to google.

On another forum its been suggested that it may be a problem with faulty capacitors on the PC motherboard or a faulty PSU. My PC was ok in that respect.

I solved the problem in the end by pressing the F8 button, which takes you into a setup menu-amongst which is safe mode. In this case I tried "start computor using the last known good settings" which worked. so it looks like a PC startup/boot problem.

I hope this helps if anyone has a similar problem in the future. Thanks Steenamarroo for your help;I,ve learnt how to trash preferances.
Andy.
