Prosonus Central Command vs. Furman SRM-80A

Does anyone have hands on with either of these routers?

I currently use two Radio Shack boxes - one to choose the signal to my monitoring system power amp (DAT, CD, Cassette, console room signal, etc) and one to choose which of 4 sets of (passive) speakers that signal goes to.

This low tech system works well enough, but I'm ready to upgrade. I can get the Prosonus for about $450 and the Furman is retail at $700 - so I suspect it has a street price of about $420-$450.

I have the Central Station and I can't shut up about it (On the PreSonus website, I'm the "John S. - IL" on the Central Station page).

It kicks a$$ and the D/A converters are solid. Passive switching (A or B plus C available for sub use), trim controls on the front, meter calibration...

Couldn't have routed it all better myself.

Not too familiar with the Furman - But yeah, I think they both list at $699 so it's probably a feature-war for you.

I own the Furman unit. I bought it used from a friend. I think for my purposes it'll do everything I need just fine, but for him, it didn't cut it. He's a stickler for things working perfectly (which I suppose we all should be...but I tend to use things that will work for what I need). The electronics in the Furman are NOT top grade, the pots don't change levels exactly evenly, but it DOES do what it claims it can do. Admittedly it's a high priced unit for it's quality, but since I got it fairly cheap, I'm not gonna complain.

If MM swears by the Presonus (which I have no experiance with), then I'd take his word that it's a good item. If you could find the Furman cheap used, it may be worth it, but I wouldn't spend the money on a new one.

Thanks for the replys.

Since I already own some Prosonus gear which I've been very satisfied with, I am likely leaning toward that vs. the Furman (although the couple of Furman units I've owned never failed me)

Its Presonus, not Prosonus.
Central Station, not Central Command.
Just clarifying it. If you spell things correctly you have a much better chance of getting good hits on a search engine.

I just picked-up a Central Station -- it IS a very good-sounding unit........... damn quiet!

Hey Blue Bear,

Where and at what price did you get yours at? I'm lookin' to pick one up as well. I live in Ontario too!

Steve's music store is carrying them at $699 - which is currently equal to US retail of $499 (ie - a good deal if you factor in what it would cost for customs brokerage and US shipping!!)

Hey BB - Did you get the remote unit?

I don't actually need one (thie thing is directly in front of my face here), but if I do the little bit of "remodeling" I'm hoping to do...

Naw - I didn't bother......... I've got it racked right near the console, so there's no point in having the remote in my case........!

The Central Station is freakin Awesome. I Love the nuetrality of the unit.

Beats the old way i controlled monitoring of my DAW

Anybody who buys this unit should be VERY well pleased. Clean and clear. Imaging is fantastic.

I need to get anothe rone of these units

John or Bryan (or anyon elese with the Presonus unit).....

Have you tried the MONO button? When I switch it on in mine, the level goes up (no panning law, I presume) and the signal appears to stay stereo??!?!?

Any of you notice the same thing?

Hey Blue. I did notice a problem there. BTW Blue I need to come check out your spot one day. :) My Spot is listed as Patricks Den recording on Johns site. :)

Anyway back to that mono button.

The level does go up. I believe this is due to the fact that this is really a hybrid active/passive device with a goal of almost nothing in the circuit path that would compromise the sound quality. Of course I am sure the debate will rage over at rec.audio.pro, but.... LOL

I mix again on Friday, I will pay more attention to the Mono-ness of the mono button then.

Mine sonds pretty darn mono... Not sure what your room is like - Could it be that the increased volume is increasing the early reflections enough to make it sound "spacious" or something?

I'm a huge Presonus fan, so I guess I'm going to have to pick one of these things up.

Rick at Presonus is great to talk with... I'm listed as one of the pro users on their site :)

John.... my control room was designed by John Sayers, it's definitely NOT a room issue!

Using the mono switch on the Mackie console puts the audio dead center, so it's something about the way the Presonus handles the mono summing........

Maybe it's that lava lamp doing it!

I hope there isn't some sort of problems with the units as I'm looking to get one. Have you popped the hood on one to see inside yet?

I talked with Rick Naqvi from Presonus just a while ago... he said that Presonus is backordered about 2 weeks on them right now...

Not sure if any of the larger Presonus resellers have them in stock (Sweetwater etc)
