Proper way to demagnetize?

I just got a Tascam Demagnetizer. When doing this should you actually touch the heads of the tape deck or just come close?
I also picked up a DBX 150X Noise Redux for my Akai R-R(71/2" per second,1/4" tape).I might want to try one one of the Dolby units too.Would type A be right for my setup?

You want to come as close to the head as possible without touching it. This is so you don't accidentally scratch or mar the head.

Make sure the machine is off when you do the de-mag procedure!

As for finding a dolby A unit, I think they are pretty rare to locate a decent used one and they were designed for open reel recorders running 15ips or better. They are also balanced units only and your deck is unbalanced, I believe.

Cheers! :)

Thanks Ghost. It's hard to find info on which units work with certain tape players.I'll keep looking.
