Proper stages for recording

Yeeha my first question.

So do I plug my bass/guitar/whatever into my compressor and then into the mixer/recorder? Or, do I record the signal dry and then run it through the insert and use the compressor? I suppose the same question could be considered for an EQ as opposed to a compressor.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

If your mixer has a channel insert, then it will work either way.
