Promoting myself

I want to aquire a better fan base in my area (Inland empire, california), but there aren't really any venues that showcase Hip Hop acts around (if there are then hopefully I'll find them). What are some good ways to promote? I've mainly been using the internet, but for 5 months I've had my site up and only sold 1 cd. People say my stuff is good though. I've probably have passed out 100 demo cd's. oh well, I'm lost. help.
