Project5 is aimed more toward the creation of loop-based electronic music. Sonar is geared toward audio recording.

Thanks, I'll probably end up downloading as many programs as I can to see which ones I like using most. Seems like the primary difference between these programs is mostly just user preference.

Instead of asking what is the difference between the two, why do you mention the type of music you want to make, Beats? Country? Do you need MIDI etc? We might be able to point you in the direction you should go...

Well, I personally want to make electronica kinda stuff (trance, techno, disneyland music, whatever you wanna call it), but I also want to be able to record bands, starting with my friends band (rock).
Hard to know my budget, I'm moving out of my parents house soon so it'll be a lot tighter than it has been, but one thing about me is I don't like substituting low quality products/programs just to save a few bucks. I'll have a better understanding of my budget in about a month or two, but as far as a sequencing program goes, I figure on spending anywhere from $400-800.
I've used Acid before, but it wasn't a Pro version, but I found it really easy to use and enjoyed it. I think I'd want something with more features though, I'm not sure if the Pro version would be enough of what I want so I'm looking for other more professional programs I could use, hopefully I can find something with not too steep of a learning curve.

well, I don't know Project 5, but I believe that Sonar has Acid abilities, so you'd be at home with that. If P5 has it too, then I don't know what to tell you

I use ACID PRO 4.0 and SONAR 3 Producers Edition for my "Electronica" production.

Yes, you can use ACID-compatible sample loops in both Sonar 3 and Project5.
Project5 is useful when composing pattern-based music, whether they be MIDI loops or audio loops. It provides a huge number of tools for the composition of techno-type music, although you can compose other styles as well.
If you want to record large audio projects though, then Sonar 3 is what you want.
Or you could get both because they can also be used in conjunction with one another either through ReWire or by simply using the P5 synths from within Sonar.

Another great program probably the best for dance and electronic music is Reason by propellerhead http://www.propellerheads.se/. I know this is a cake walk forum but some exceptions have to be made.
