I'm becomiing confused about what Prog is. I know what it was & it usually involved solos that, through the song, lyrics & arrangements, took one on a journey of sorts. I think you've decided to make this a vehicle for shredding and it suffers from that. There aren't any melodic ideas carried from sewction to section - in fact I'm not sure if there are any melodic ideas really.

Ray, he's probably thinking along the lines of more modern metal-prog like Dream Theater or Opeth, not Yes, ELP, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, etc...
It's a solid metal arrangement. The cymbals are a little too tinny. May be a simple matter of lowering them in the mix. There's very little bass from the guitars. Bass guitar could be brought up some too. Do a little more stereo separation on the guitars as well, then once those issues are addressed you need to normalize the final mix a little more aggressively.
I like the spoken word section a lot, but it's very difficult to make out what's being said.
I like the shredding, it works in the context of the rest of the song. Very emotive IMO, but I'm into that sort of thing anyway.

True, theres no melodic theme to the tune, guilty as charged. One or 2 sections are pretentiously shreddy, guilty as well. Theres only 1 rhythm guitar going on, maybe will go in and record another guitar track with a little more bottom to the sound to take care of the overall low end issue and stereo seperation at the same time? As a footnote, I LOVE those 70's proggers, too. Someone at work said rush was coming around this summer. Thanks for the advice on the tune fellas!

I'm working an angle for some good seats at a 20% discount at the Saratoga NY show. I can't honestly afford full prices, so that discount may make it realistic for me to attend. Have never been to a Rush show despite being a diehard fan since 1991. I tend to avoid live shows because of the crowds, parking, typically poor sound, drug use, etc. Live DVDs are much easier on me in every way possible, but something tells me I should at least see them once before they retire.

I wouldnt pay for live shows these days either, besides the DVD is usually better anyhow, and in the comfort of my own livingroom as well.

you HAVE to see Rush live at least once before they hang it up. i scored 13th row for their show in DC this summer.
the dvds are good..........but they don't hold a candle to seeing it live. and Rush's live sound is fantastic. it sounds like the dvds do.
to be totally honest, i'm completely surprised they're touring again. i expected the R30 tour was gonna be the last one. if you don't go this time you might not get another chance. i've been thinking about ponying up the immense $$$ for front row, actually, for that very reason.
i've caught at least one show on every tour since the Presto tour, and they've ALL been good. you NEED to go.
