I present to you the greatest statement I have read all year.

"There is no such thing as accuracy. The best engineers and producers know this, and seek to create the ILLUSION of accuracy through exactly the correct amount of exaggeration to create the magical illusion. The bottom line is, does the instrument appear in front of you? Is the vocalist 'standing on the console' like a hologram in front of you? If so, congratulations, regardless of how you did it, you just made a recording!"

I think you hit the nail right on the head. A few days ago I recorded a session with my favorite female singer. I mixed the cuts and played them in my car stereo which has six speakers and it a very good system. I found her voice to be a bit too brassy, and hitting a few too many clips.

I remixed the session today and became very aware that my Yorkville mic, used for the first time in a session, is a very, very sensitive mic, hence the clips. [too much input used]

In the remix I made sure my input to "tape" [I am still getting a CD burner], was below what I usually set it to. [It is a very good tape deck]

The result was four times better than the first mixdown.

So, your observation that a little luck is needed and plenty of sweat and effort will help to get the voice UP FRONT [WHICH IS MY SPECIALTY] and the music balanced.
