Problems with AT4040

I purchased a new AT4040 about four months ago, and seem to have a problem. No matter what preamp I use or what board I connect to the mike sounds like "..wax paper and a comb..". This effect is most pronounced when being used to record vocals, and less pronounced when recording classical guitar. I have a Steadman windscreen which is always used and I have tried adding the 10db pad just in case the first stage was being overloaded, but in comparisions with other mics it just appears to be raspy. Have sent an email to AT today to see if they will respond, but was wondering if anyone else has had this problem? I have insured that I was not overdriving the preamps, but cant seem to get past this problem. Thanks for any suggestions.
