Problem with Sonar software monitoring

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has experienced anything akin to the following problem and if anyone knows what is causing it. I am using Sonar to record some tracks with added software effects - the effects drastically change the sound of the input (an electric guitar) so I need to monitor them as I am recording. The problem is that after a few minutes of software monitoring (anywhere from 2-30 minutes) the monitoring stops and a looped sound consisting of the last second or so of audio is repeated indefinitely. I am recording with an M Audio USB Duo, which has given me a variety of problems, so I suspect it may be the culprit. Does anyone have any ideas?

thanks!

I would certainly think so. I use Input Monitoring all the time, so I don't think it's Sonar. Have you updated the drivers?

Hmm, okay. I am using the latest drivers, but this device just doesn't seem to get along with my laptop. It's given me nightmare upon nightmare. If no one has any other suggestions, I'm going to get rid of it. Thanks.

Throw it in your diced coffee maker. Now there's a satisfying crunch.:D

We'll try, of course. But a "nightmare" isn't a good description to work by, you see. ;)

Can you provide more information?

Alright, I'll try to be a little more descriptive about the problems I've experienced. My previous description might have been dramatic, but I think it's justified. I wasn't really going to talk about all the problems I've had with the hardware, but maybe it's all really part of the same problem and if someone has an idea as to how to fix that - ? - I'll try anything as a last shot before I throw in the towel. Anyway, I was trying to record with Cool Edit Pro for a while, but couldn't do software monitoring at all for some reason, and when I played back/recorded something, about one out of every four times it would play back or record a horrible distorted version of the audio. I switched the Duo from 44.1 khz to 96, and it didn't distort in this manner, but it won't function in full duplex mode at 96 khz, so this didn't really fix the problem. I was told by tech support that the USB sharing an IRQ with some other devices was what was creating the problem, and you can't change IRQs in Windows XP, so I tried to install Windows ME and then Windows 98 with no luck - both installations froze midway through. My entire hard drive was wiped out because of the failed installations. I then did a clean install of XP and viola, the card worked at last. That is, for about two weeks. I started using Sonar because software monitoring still didn't work under Cool Edit. Then the same old distortion problem started up again inexplicably. (I just realized this a couple days ago.) I *might* be able to live with that if I could get the software monitoring to work properly, but if not this device is just too much of a pain to hold on to. I wasn't intending to ask for help with the Duo here, but hey, if anyone has any ideas...

Thanks for the suggestion, if I had a coffee grinder I'd throw the thing in there.

Well, IRQs can be changed in WinXP but not in ACPI mode, which I'm sure you're running. You can read how to disable it here (if you're willing to give the card another chance).

But I think most laptops are happy with ACPI so perhaps it woudln't work, but it's worth a try.

WARNING! A REFORMAT MIGHT BE NEEDED IF EVERYTHING ELSE FAILS!

My DUO gives me some problems with overheating sometimes if I'm doing a lot of tracking with playback. It will work just fine and then all of a sudden just quit outputting or taking input of any signal. Not sure if this is your problem but it could be.

Wish M-Audio would have added an internal fan.

My solution --> Prop the card up so that it sits a good 3 - 4 inches off of any surface, and fan the hell out of it :):):)

and you can't change IRQs in Windows XP,
I don't use XP, but I don't believe this statement is correct. There is a way to install XP that will allow you to assign IRQ's.

I *believe* you have to install it with APCI disabled, which can be done during the XP installation process.

Do some searching around. If IRQ assignment is truly the problem, it can be done. Sorry that I don't the specifics though.

You might try posting a question on the Sonar Newsgroup. I know there are people there who can guide you through it.
