problem with mp3 uploading

Hi.

I've recorded and mastered some songs... when I upload them to a music sharing site such as Purevolume and Virb and play them through the website, they sound terrible... they have a prominent fluttering/wavy sound.

When I play the original mp3 file on my desktop, all sounds fine. Well, I notice some fluttering, but nowhere near as much as when played through the websites...

Anyone know why this is happening? Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

Thanks.

Rick

The issues your noticing are most likely a result of the data compression applied by the website. The best way around this is to mix and master knowing how it will sound on the website. So creating different mixes, might be a better option than just using one mix and squashing it to an mp3.

I think PureVolume uses 96KBPS, or it did last time I used it.
MySpace uses some weird settings, you might want to try 96 or 128.
SoundClick uses 128 unless you pay for an account then you can go up to 320.

So when you upload a song at say, 192 or 320 KBPS, and the site is using something like 96 or 128...it will re-convert your MP3 to MP3 again... so there is a lot of quality loss.

So do what PAETEK said and upload at the site's settings.

Thank you Paetek and .guitar for your responses.

This does shed some light on what's been happening... although I need to do some research on what KBPS is and how to work with that. I'm guessing that I can change the KBPS rate in my DAW software? (Ableton Live).

I'll do some research and try to work with it today. I'll post my findings as soon as I can...

Thanks.

Hi. Yes, it seems you guys were correct... kbps rate was the problem. PureVolume is at 64kbps for a free account. Virb is probably the same... couldn't get an answer, their customer service is not too responsive.

I'm on Alonetone.com now, and their rate is at 128kbps... my songs sounds just how I would like them to without any awful compression. A good website, check it out if you want to.

Thanks for your help.

Rick
